| it's not like I Know There's An Answer, and i don't really think the character is numb, ignorant or just shallow, the song it's a sad song, mainly about depression and can be very well linked to mental health, John Lennon dealed with depression because of his relationship with Cynthia and unsatisfaction with fame, John is singing for himself, and the "just sees what he wants to see" is not a truth, it's a fear, a paranoia or an intrusive thought, the character probably is a little bit intelectual, probably because of that he feels like a misfit, and he feels some kind of imposter syndrome, and some lines of the song can mean hope, John believes he can get out of the mess he was dwelling with | |

She is a strong and confident girl, but also a bit selfish, unkind and a femme fatale, she is in love with this sensible and innocently fascinated boy, and she knows that her toxic love is going to hurt him, the song comes to me as a kind of a warning, she can't and don't want to help her feelings but she wants even less to hurt him "I'm a fountain of blood, In the shape of a girl" Blood is an aesthetic element that suggests violence, the boy sees and fall in love with a girl, but she actually is just pain, he has fallen in her spell and he sees the fountain, beautiful and charming, he just doesn't sees that there is blood on the fountain "You're the bird on the brim, Hypnotized by the whirl" This just reforces what i said above, plus bird can suggest the fragility of the boy, hypnotized the intense love he feels and whirl the way that this love is made on highs and lows, on confusion and it's unpredictable "Drink me, make me feel real Wet your beak in the stream Game we're playing is life Love is a two way dream." The love he offers to her makes her feel good, it gives her adrenaline and self validation, even when he just gives slightly passionate signs ("wet your beak in the stream"), it is a game, this can show that the girl is manipulative and how dangerous it is for him to get her into his life (whic he doesn't see or mind, because she is already deeply rooted in his life) and it is a two way dream, love can be a sweet and good dream, but it also can lead you to your worse nightmare "Leave me now, return tonight Tide will show you the way If you forget my name You will go astray Like a killer whale Trapped in a bay." Here my interpretation is much more weaker, but i think that it means that she is not suffocating him but she is jealous and wants his attention in an unhealthy way, and if he doesn't giver, she makes him feel guilty "I'm a path of cinders Burning under your feet You're the one who walks me I'm your one way street." Again, she is dangerous, she is a fire, but still he walks her and gets his feet burned, and she is a one way street, she'll lead him to trauma and a broken heart "I'm a whisper in water Secret for you to hear You are the one who grows distant When I beckon you near" She is a whisper in water, she disturbs what is still, she purposely makes him paranoid, anxious and insecure, for a weak pearson is easier to manipulate, and this dark side of her she only shows when she's in a romantic relationship, other people can't see ("Secret for you to hear"), he feels the pain of her toxic behaviour alone, and probably people belittle his pains when he shows them because on the superfice the girl is fine, but in an intimate relationship she shows her rotten and cruel ways; she makes him numb, she controls him and leaves him helpless, so he can fall easier on her spell ("You're the one who grows distant, when i beckon you near") "I'm a tree that grows hearts One for each that you take You're the intruder hand I'm the branch that you break." The love she can gives make the lovers dependant, for she is a tree that grows hearts, the affection is wide and enormous, and because of that he takes, but this love is noit welcoming, his hand is an intruder's hand, and he is going to fail in dealing with the abusive relationship, he is going to break the branch. This a somehow personal interpretation, but it fits well and i think that it is helpful or interesting. |
