It's interesting to see how Jeremy's change in world view since starting with SDRE has affected his lyrics. My immediate impression about this song is that it's in reference to a pacifistic perspective on world politics.
What I love about the song, though, is the time it's set in. (2/3? I'm so bad with music terminology.) I love how he's unafraid to set songs to what would traditionally be a waltz time. |

I like how it throws things off - you think he's just at a party chilling with friends, but there's got to be something else going on to warrant this chainsaw-like grinding noise. Hmm. |

The sweet simplicity of this song kills me every time. Elliott's voice is so wistful, and the guitar accompanying reminds me of early summer in the most nostalgic way possible.
I agree with LuckCharm, it does sound like first love (at the age of 13 perhaps?) ... and yet it's hard to get away from the raw yearning (repeated questions convey so much insecurity) even when middle school is a distant memory. |

that is possibly the best description of sunny day real estate's sound that I've ever heard...it's almost singing in a foreign language..all of the emotion is there but sometimes the words don't make sense. It's an addictive confusion.

My personal favorite part of this song has to be the organ, because it's somewhat unexpected for SDRE...I have a huge playlist of mp3's so sometimes I zone out while involved in something else, and I remember the organ part of "Every Shining Time.." catching my attention. One of my favorite songs, and I love the chorus.. |
