This song(well, at least in my interpretation of it) it is written from multiple perspectives, or perhaps two halves of the brain of a person who suffers from suicidal ideation. Furthermore, that person is struggling with moving forward with life after a major relationship has come to an end. I think that the song is about a person struggling with a depressive episode so intense that they are considering ending their life. Their non-depressive side is trying to argue against taking that action. Mike Shinoda's parts are from the non-depressive/non-suicidal side. Chester Bennington's parts are from the depressive/suicidal side. The song begins with the non-suicidal side speaking: "This is not the end, this is not the beginning Just a voice like a riot rocking every revision But you listen to the tone and the violent rhythm And though the words sound steady, something's empty within'em" The manic side is arguing, before the depressive side even gets a chance to put forth their thoughts/emotions, that this is a phase that can be endured if you just hold on. While there isn't as much hope as there has been previously, it is not the end. These heavy emotions may be loud, intrusive(like a riot) and they may feel neverending, but you've been through these episodes before and they DO indeed end. "The words sound steady, but something's is empty within them," means that as real and loud as these suicidal thoughts seem right now, you've felt them before and they HAVE passed. We say, "yeah" With fists flying up in the air Like we're holding onto something That's invisible there 'Cause we're living at the mercy of The pain and the fear Until we dead it, forget it Let it all disappear In this part, the non-depressive side tries to get out in front of the depressive side's tried-and-true justifications of their wish to end things, which are that the depressive side likes to hold up a mirror to the non-depressive side to mock their perspective. Making fun of them for resisting suicide. Saying, "Why are you lifting your hands up? What are you fighting for? Your reason for resistance is ridiculous, it is like trying to hold on to something that doesn't exist." The non-depressive side knows that the depressive side is going to say, "If your point is that we've been through this before and we haven't commited suicide yet, then why are we here again, and why keep riding this merry-go-round? We should just end it and be done with this never-ending cycle of bullshit." But the non-depressive side is mocking the depressive side, trying to point out the selfishness and childishness of those thoughts. Mocking the idea that 'we're just at the mercy of pain and fear'. Making fun of the concept that we should just 'dead it' and give up everything over emotions that time has proven are, while cyclical, still just temporary phases. The song continues with the depressive side finally speaking. It doesn't have a strong counter-argument, but the non-depressive side's argument hasn't exactly changed anything. "Waiting for the end to come Wishing I had strength to stand This is not what I had planned It's out of my control Flying at the speed of light Thoughts were spinning in my head So many things were left unsaid It's hard to let you go I know what it takes to move on I know how it feels to lie All I wanna do Is trade this life for something new Holding on to what I haven't got The depressive side is exhausted. Tired of being strong, so it is waiting and longing for the end. There are so many things it wants to say to the person with which the relationship ended. It is exhausted further by the non-depressive side's constant rebuttals, as shown by the line "I know what it takes to move on".... but immediately followed by an admission that it is lying. The suicidal side concedes that it would love nothing more than to trade this obsession with the past for hope for the future. But the depressive, suicidal side can't let go of the relationship that has ended(All I wanna do is trade this life for something new instead of holding on to what I haven't got). The rest of the song continues this way with Mike Shinoda's parts representing the non-suicidal side, trying to argue with Chester Bennington's suicidal side. Mike's words offer encouragement, in a self aware way at points- as if it is saying, "I don't even know what I am saying sometimes. Some of my words may fall flat, but please just keep fighting" (when Mike sings "I don't even know what kind of things I've said- My mouth kept moving and my mind went dead). The non-suicidal side also concedes that they don't know how to move forward. The hardest part of this is knowing where to start, but the non-suicidal side is searching for how to find that new start, and insists it is worth it to persevere. (So, picking up the pieces, now where to begin? The hardest part of ending is starting again.) The end of the song is the most beautiful part. Because both sides are speaking at the same time. One trying to win over the other. Representing how conflicted this person continues to be. |

| @[carpeomniachica:39398] This comment about your interpretation of this song is almost 10 years old, but WOW. Thanks for this. I've been trying to digest the lyrics to this song for years but it's just so melodic and enjoyable to listen to... I get caught up in that, and never really return to the intention I had of trying to figure out what the fuck is happening with the lyrics. Now I may be obsessing over your interpretation for nearly as long. | |

These lyrics, like many written by Chris Cornell, are especially potent now, considering that he eventually ended his own life. Take yourself back to the 90's(if you were an adult then) and remember how the current political climate was in it's infancy back then. We all saw this coming then, although there was at least hope that common sense would right the ship. But it didn't. This song was released in 1991. Fast forward 30 years. Far right extremism has taken hold. Billionaires brain-washing the working class in to thinking liberals want to take their freedoms has succeeded. Uneducated rednecks simp for CEOs like a computer program does what it's engineer designed it to do. Like a shepherd trains it's sheep to do. All while the world burns. People like Cornell, Bennington, etc saw it coming. They waited while you morons elected Bush over Gore. They waited to see if the world would come to it's senses. They waited while we were all manipulated in to thinking the Iraq war was about anything other than oil. They waited through the insanity of the 2008 election when McCain took that moron Palin as his VP candidate. Then, finally, when their countrymen elected Donald Trump, it became clear that there was no hope and they ended their own lives. Chris knew the world was going down, and he got out before they had to watch he world he loved drown. |
