I imagine that this song has something to do with his inner consciousness. What really speaks to me here is the line "I know the game, the game, I know the score. I know my name, my name, but this tune means more." It seems to me that Nick here has come to terms, or maybe has realized, the direction that he is heading and sees an end to his life coming (I know the score, the ending to the game). Much like in Fruit Tree, where he explains how great artists are underappreciated in their life times, "This tune means more" seems to refer to the idea that his music will far outlive him? |
