Isles & Glaciers – Hills Like White Elephants Lyrics 3 years ago
Although you can tell this song is about drugs.
I view it differently.

Lyrics:
These are the themes of the way that we love
These are the hearts of lonely people ripped in front of us

- Meaning interpreted: -
Right off the start, the song is about how someone has the power over another. In a duel meaning; One could assume drugs. Consider the power that cocaine has over a person who is addicted. The requirement of attention it seeks to you, the loneliness it causes from everyone you lose during your addiction phase.
By an alternative meaning, the one I'm currently feeling; It's about a woman who has the ability to see lonely people. To feel for them and with them. And use that as her advantage.
"These are the hearts of lonely people ripped in front of us". She loves toying with them; As she, herself, seeks attention and is lonely, but she enjoys the attention she is provided from the lonely people.

Lyrics:
Things aren't the way that we
Love as if you didn't know at all
I'd like to bare the heart of us
Never once, never knew, faded lust with no love
Wish I could answer you
So uptight and desperate for attention
We're all lost and begging to be found

- Meaning interpreted: -
Acknowledgement that things aren't how they believed it was; They believed it was love. They believed that they (the woman, or the drug) was holding the weight of their heart, but it wasn't love...it was lust without love. It was addiction without a high. They were desperate for their attention. They are and were lost, and they thought that person (or the drug) found them.

Lyrics:
With every word you say you lead everyone on

- Meaning interpreted: -
A note to her, or a simple notion that the drug is used to dull the pain. It "leads" them on. Be it the woman, who is leading on the man or group of men. Or the drug that leads them to believe it's required.

Lyrics:
You've stopped before the sinner says a word
I need to take it out on you, really take it out, really give it all
As hard as I can and let you, let you have it all, do I make you?

- Meaning interpreted:-
Splitting this part into two, as it's imperative you understand.
He confronted her; And stopped confronting her before she said a word. He let's her have all the power once more; Bends at his knees and provides her with what he believes she wants. "Do I make you?" is the question men would always ask a woman they're infatuated with. I'll let you fill in that last word. By contrast with drug relation; You can formulate they succumbed to the addiction once more. A quick side note. Drugs go perfect with this theme; As being lonely and infatuated with someone that "uses you" for the same notion is equally as addictive as a drug. Especially when you've only known loneliness and suicidal thoughts rush through your mind, the simple notion of attention is so addictive once you have it...especially if you've never had it.

Lyrics:
Don't start, don't start shaking again
She can make the salt taste like sugar on her hands
But if love is a way out, then please let me in
Don't start, darling
Don't you turn my nightmares into dreams again

- Meaning interpreted:-
This is the part of the song I relate with the most. Don't start shaking again. First; orgasm. Second, addiction; Physical shaking is a sign of requiring the drug. Consequently; shaking legs are the of an 'peak' orgasm.
Salt. She can make it taste like sugar; She can make the most bitter tasting substance taste sweet; She can make everything in the world "better".
A person's deepest, darkest thoughts are turned into dreams and hope; Removing suicide, depravity and despair from their process.
This relates to drugs the same way as it does a relationship like this. Once more; It's a very abusive, commensalism relationship, disguised as symbiotic. She is only doing it for attention; She doesn't care about or for him. He believes she is in love with him.

Lyrics:
We all did what we had to do
With regrets

- Meaning interpreted: -
He understands why she does it. He understands she, too, is extremely lonely. He doesn't pitty or hate her. He believes she can change. "We all did what we had to do". He knew in some way, he was using her for that feeling he never had; And after realizing what she does and why she does it, he simply regrets falling for the trap.

I'll let you connect the rest with drugs.
If you ever find yourself leading people on to "feel better about yourself". Don't. Learn to love that person and maybe you'll see you can make it work. There's a reason that attraction exists. Don't just pick another person because it seems simpler, or because they're less of a burden. Some people need a little bump in the right direction. Others already had it from their life being perfect. Others never had life work out for them.
Sometimes people need a boost. Some call them red flags. Instead, call them people in progress to become better versions.

Sleeping with Sirens – If I'm James Dean, You're Audrey Hepburn Lyrics 4 years ago
I keep viewing this song as more closely related to the situation I\'ve been within this last year.\nLess of a begging for \'her back\', but more of an assurance that what they have is real, and he knows she isn\'t sure of anything, and has a hard time trusting and staying.\n\nEach stanza broken down, I believe it starts off as a dialog:\nHim:\nStay for tonight\nIf you want to\nI can show you\nWhat my dreams are made of\nAs I\'m dreaming of your face\n\nHer:\nI\'ve been away for a long time\nSuch a long time\nAnd I miss you there\nI can\'t imagine being anywhere else\n\nHim:\nI can\'t imagine being anywhere else but here\n\nHim:\nHow the hell did you ever pick me?\nHonestly, I could sing you a song\nBut I don\'t think words can express your beauty\nIt\'s singing to me\n\nHer:\nHow the hell did we end up like this?\n\nHim:\nYou bring out the beast in me\nI fell in love from the moment we kissed\nSince then we\'ve been history\n\nBefore moving forward, it\'s clear that this is the intention from the title of the song; There is no relation between the two actors but with a bit of deduction it\'s clear he is depicting himself as James Dean and herself as Aubrey Hepburn of a set era piece.\n\nSo the first stanzas were clearly depicting her leaving and coming back, him ecstatic that she\'s there once more. He is forming loads of inspiration from her presence, and she is both sorry she left, and him asking her to stay. He then goes onto to find the inspiration behind what he loves about her, and it\'s more than just physical appearance, words cannot even describe it...and "since then we\'ve been history".\n\nContinuing with the lyrics:\n\n- Chorus - All \'him\'; His inner monologue in this dialog.\nThey say that love is forever\nYour forever is all that I need\nPlease stay as long as you need\nCan\'t promise that things won\'t be broken\nBut I swear that I will never leave\nPlease stay forever with me\n\nBriefly; The chorus is his inner monologue of the situation. The somewhat toxic, yet ravenous romance that they share. He dreams for her to stay and believes a promise of him not leaving will stop her from leaving.\n\nNext Stanza -\n\nHim:\nIt goes to show, I hope that you know that you are\nWhat my dreams are made of\n\nHer:\nCan\'t fall asleep, \nHim:\nCan\'t fall asleep\nHer: I lay in my bed awake\n\nHim: In my bed awake at night\nAs I dream of you\nI\'ll fall in love, you\'ll fall in love\nIt could mean everything, everything to me\nHer:\nI can\'t imagine being anywhere else\n\nBreaking this down:\nIt\'s clear he is viewing what is happening as far more than the face value. He\'s not falling for her, he already fell. He\'s hoping she falls for him this time, and is dreaming that this next time will allow her to fall for him, too.\n\nFinally the end:\n\nHer:\nThe way that we are\nIt\'s the reason I stay\nHim:\nAs long as you\'re here with me\nI know we\'ll be okay\nHer:\nThe way that we are\nIs the reason I stay\nHim:\nAs long as you\'re here with me\nI know I\'ll be okay\n\nThe relationship is both partially toxic, in that he is giving every bit of ounce of his energy, his love, his life to what would otherwise be someone that may not care even a partial bit for him. And it\'s consumed him so much, that he believes that as long as she\'s still there and trying, \'he\' will be okay, not just the relationship. In this manner, it becomes dependent, heavily, on this unhealthy balance of her being held to a different standard than another Human.\n\nMy situation isn\'t much different, but it\'s enough to warrant concern for myself. I feel almost identical to these lyrics with her, and honestly I can\'t say I disagree with reasoning entirely, but the last stanza is where I differ immensely from myself to Kellin. I know I\'d be okay regardless of circumstance, however I can\'t say I wouldn\'t ignore the chemistry that exists, or drop everything for this same chemistry to keep progressing toward the end goal. Maybe it\'s the age I\'m at, maybe it\'s the mid 2000\'s emo 30+ year old adult attempting to creep out, but whatever it is.\n\nThese, I believe, are the true meanings behind this song.\nIt\'s kind of like a dialog unfolding; A movie or a play where you\'re witnessing a guy madly in love with a girl finally have his next chance to win her back...and you know it\'s just a little bit toxic, but you\'re rooting for him because he\'s the sweetest guy in the world, and she\'s been broken and damaged enough times where she needs exactly that.

Slipknot – Vermilion Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.

I frequent this song because it just...it hits home in exactly my life. Unrequired love...by someone who can't accept that it's unrequited.

"She seems dressed in all the rings
Of past fatalaties..."
This entire stanza is explaining how she is. And how hurt she has been herself.

"She is everything and more
The solemn hypnotic"
This stanza is as clear as the lyrics. Corey's explaining everything about her that he loves; "his"possession to him, although no person can ever be owned by another. He knows this...but he wants 'her'.

"She's the only one that makes me sad"
Nothing in life is worth sadness, nothing in life is worth pain or guilt. But her...she gives him a feeling. A feeling of love and of sadness.

"Hard to say what caught my attention
Vixen crazy, aphid attraction"
This entire part is about why he fell for her, and what kept her there and keeps her in his heart even after all the rejection, or whatever may be. For me..it's ghosting.

"I'm a slave, and I am a master
No restraints and unchecked collectors"
Same as above.

"I won't let this build up inside of me"
He won't let it drive him to the edge that he inevitably feels is all life is worth. Suicide. Death. Because there's no point in living when you can have everything but the only thing you can't have...is love.
Right now I feel this. Especially after a bad fall out with someone I was seeing.

It Dies Today – My Promise Lyrics 4 years ago
2021. No one guessed the right meaning, however it's clear most barely understood the lyrics when they were 16 and trying to find 'meaning in their life'.

This song is about watching someone you were with leave you for another person whom you cared for. They both betrayed you; And you wish them both to burn in the eternal flames.

"Let's seal this greeting with the passion from a razor's kiss."
Simpleton terms; They care so little about him that kissing a razor would be more satisfying than with the woman (or man) whom he (or she) loved.

"Compassion, a virtue never synonymous with this name."
The person lacks compassion; Empathy, the ability to understand why it hurt's them the way it does.

"Now my gaze pierces two sets of somber eyes,"
"Of which only dreams had brought in yesteryear."
Looking into the eyes of their now past friend and their past lover, which only dreams can bring nostalgia back without experiencing the pain of current day.

"My misery, my bane, and my envy personified."
"I will take everything from you."
They will bring their feelings to life, and take everything that 'those people' took from them, away from them in spite.

"I will replicate an assembled heart, forged from your collective agony,"
They'll figuratively put together the two 'hearts' of the couple based along the lines of how much they hurt the writer.

"And I will tear away until there are but two beating hearts before me."
He'll then shred the collective singular manifestation of a figurative heart into 'two' separate figurative pieces, of which were created by the amount of pain of which the writer experienced.

"I will tear away, for my greatest triumph lies in the:"
Fear, loathing, resentment, and spite"
Explaining what they accomplished by betraying (the writer). The fear of others doing the same to (the writer), loathing of which of those two, the resentment of the two, and the spite of which (the writer) feels of this sort of act.

"Will scourge them both for the rest of their wretched days."
(The writer) will forever hold a grudge and punish them for what they did to (the writer) for the rest of their days.

It's actually not a hard one to understand, but it certainly has a place in a lot of peoples hearts. Watching your significant other fall for someone you considered a friend, only to notice it happening. Deny it, or confront and get it denied. For them to then abruptly leave you, and blame it on you. That sort of pain doesn't just sting, it lingers and manifests the worst kind of emotions out of you. The song itself (musically) doesn't fit with the lyrics, but it does reflect upon that persons emotional state during this entire album.

@[whoa:35889] 1gp Well it's 2021. And the only thing you did was say the lyrics were written by an 8th grader. Good job. I'm sure as you're much older now and you look back, and realize that there's two distinct songs on the album that have very depressing undertones.
Happiness by the Kilowatt & this song (Accidents). Happiness by the Kilowatt is about a traumatic event, in which the narrator is told to 'be alone, find a place, start over'. Does so. "Happy", but it was a delusion fulfilled by the fantasies of others, not himself. This time lingered in his mind and the depression pursued him and the thoughts of suicide nuanced all over the song, from the 'feel' to the lyrics.
This is a continuation from that song. The aftermath. That's why it's called "Accident". It was a failed suicide attempt, and the "Treatment" he had to go through. "Drugs" are a reference to how they 'treat suicide cases', they just give you antidepressants. Meth. Lots of it. And they don't really help you, they just make it numb for a duration. Digression aside, the part that's important is the writers understanding of what really caused it. The horrible advice society gives everyone with a traumatic event, especially a break up:
"Be alone, find yourself, be happy alone, learn to be happy by yourself."
Sometimes, it's worse to ignore the problem and let it bottle up, especially when you're more prone to suicide, than it is to talk to someone about it...and when you have no one to talk to, it leads to the cycle. And that's the reference of the last part.

"If only we could heal ourselves. We wouldn't need to be hooked up to these machines."
When you're on life support for a potential suicide.
It's February 13th, 2021. Mid pandemic, especially in the US. We had an insurrection happen, the Country is more divided than ever. A pandemic took the lives of a few hundred thousand, and we're told to 'social distance' and to remain in-doors in most areas. No one is thinking this February 14th "think about the ones very depressed".
Because that's what this songs talk about and discuss.

I can assure you, I hope you're not like me. Because this song lingers in my mind right now as I still try to suppress it. If you are, at least you know you're not alone.

@[Deadsy20:35888] I'm sure your teenage mind at this time didn't understand, but it's tied into "Happiness by the kilowatt", the last song on this album. Many artists did this back then; They would start and end with the two connected songs (check out numerous albums). This one, in particular, is about something traumatic happened and the 'healing process' was told to be 'finding a place on your own and just being alone for a bit'. Alone, with no one to talk to (because everyone would repeat the same thing) is the source of potential suicide.
This is the aftermath of that song. His potential suicide and what he went through after...and realizing that there is no healing a broken heart and there is no mending what damage you did to yourself. And that's due to the society that we live in, even today a decade after your comment. We live in a society that inherently ridicules male depression as being "stupid, be a man".
And this song was a direct response to that, but very nuanced. There is no reference to actually 'doing' drugs, but you are prescribed drugs upon this scenario.
As a mid 30s male, I'm telling you (potentially mid 30s as well now) that's what this is about. I'm sure that's irrelevant now in your life...but hey, just a little fact pre-valentines day. If you're single, don't worry. There's others, you're not alone. In a time like 2021, everyone needs that little bit of reassurance.

2021.
It's obvious everyone in the past is clueless about this song...so they pretend it's drugs (the usual I noticed) or 'sex'. I'd assume at this point they were people the singers age writing things, or much younger (possibly myspace tweens; 14-20) writing their 'take' on an obvious tie-in song.

I'm in my mid 30s now. I heard this song in 2004...like most people who know this song, heard it.
It's the first song on the "Watch Out" album, on purpose clearly.
This song and Happiness By The Kilowatt are connected.
This song is about the aftermath of a potential suicide, which he called an 'accident'.
I'm going to spare the long 'explanation', view that song for this.

"Do they even cure you?" < Reference to the depression he's feeling that drove him to this point.
"Drug me" reference to those in this program prescribed "Antidepressants" at that era (2001+, unsure if it's still done today).
"Before we die" < Reference to potentially wanting to just do it again.

"Let's redefine
(what it means to heal)"
Reference back to Happiness by the Kilowatt. Redfine how we 'heal' from a breakup..from something that breaks our hearts. How we, as a society 'heal' isn't healthy. It's harmful, especially to some men.

"If only we could heal ourselves
We wouldn't need to be hooked up to these machines"
If you've ever been in an accident that nearly took your life, say bleeding out or trying to electrocute yourself, they need to put you on assisted living for a duration while you 'heal' in that way. But this is both a reference to that, and to the argument that if we ONLY changed, as a society, how we view 'healing' after a traumatic heart-breaking event...we would save countless of lives lost to depression. Especially male depression, which is literally ignored, especially in 2021.

Writing this on February the 13th because I'm also feeling the same. My cure is to write and to express my feelings. But in a society that singles you out for it in a negative way, I have to remain anonymous.
Even though I've been alone in this room for what feels like years, well, it has been years at this point.

Alexisonfire – Happiness By The Kilowatt Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
So many people are clueless to analogies in lyrics, and how simple but hidden they are.
This isn't about drugs. Most songs aren't actually about drugs.

This song is about the old tale:
"You were better off single, be happy alone".

Explanation per stanza .
"So this is continuous happiness
You know, I always
Imagined it something more"
Everyone hears this - 'You're better off alone, you can only love others if you learn to love yourself. You have to learn how to be happy alone' right after a breakup. It's the most obscure and unbalanced thing to tell someone, but a society bread by this stupid concept has preached it for decades.
This part is about what he imagined 'being single again' to be like, being alone in a fresh new environment and house. No one but himself. "Alone". "Happiness".

"With the right drapes, the right paints
The right frames, this could really work
What a great day to spend indoors"
He's excited. Got himself his own place, he'll decorate it the way he wants. The way he envisions. The right drapes and paints, it really really could work...what a good day to spend in doors...alone with your thoughts. Decorating..the way you once envisioned. ..With someone else.

"Wake, wake up, wake, wake up"
Wake up from the hellish reality you're trying to disguise for yourself.
You aren't happy, you're trying to be happy by disguising the sadness you feel with happiness, to be this arbitrary and obscure sadness. No one should be alone, no one should feel like they are happier alone in modern society. "Wake, wake up" repeated is for his subconscious telling him to stop believing this charade because others tell him to. Feel what he needs to feel before it's too late.

"In a hail of sparks
And a tangle of wires
Everything went wrong"
And at that moment, everything fell apart. A breakdown. "sparks" in this analogy is tears. Wires are his memories intertwined in the electrical box (receptacle) that is his life.
Everything, in this moment, he realized was wrong. Everything went wrong. This isn't where he, subsequently anyone, should ever want to be. It's not what he envisioned.

"So where has all the day gone?"
Each day passes as he doesn't know how to properly cope.
"And why are my lungs aching when I breathe?"
The feeling of remorse; Of sadness, sorrow and regret. The feeling of his wanted and needed future stripped before his eyes. It's hard to breath...when you know everything in your life was destroyed in a blink.

"Is there something wrong with the heat?
Why am I so cold?"
When you're crying hours on end, internally feeling worthless. When you feel numb to everything, and everyone...everything feels "cold".

"And my heart feels sick"
Heart break.

"And it hurts when I speak"
He can't tell anyone, it hurts to tell others because he carries the burden alone. No one cares, no one tries to care. When someone asks, it's a loop of this same sadness, this same despair. When he tries to speak, it cycles back to this same loop...it hurts.

"And this is not what I hoped for"
He didn't want heart break. He didn't want to be alone. He didn't want the future that he has embodied at that time. He didn't want everything to end the way it did. He didn't want anything that has happened. He hoped everything would be better. He hoped he could cope better.

Anyone who is on the cusp of ending their life can understand these lyrics...
it passes through your mind when you know you've been alone. And life feels otherwise meaningless when nothing is there.
This song isn't happy. This song is the exact opposite of happy. That's the purpose of it...that's why it's labeled "Happiness by the kilowatt". Odds are, his thought was to end his life in that moment the way you 'knew how' easily then. Water + Electric.

Let's talk about the music. This song gives me chills, not just because the lyrics or how it's sung, but the drums. The rhythm. The tonality. Alexisonfire did such a great job at portraying dissonance. They did a good job at portraying a shaky rhythm, like a man holding a gun to his head or a knife to his own throat. Or jumping off a building. The drums are in the exact rhythm to portray disorder...but calmness. The vocals. Oh my god, the vocals are what drives me to this song the most next to the drums. Calm behind all this commotion, behind all this chaos. As if the singer is just accepting that this pathetic excuse for happiness if the exact thing that he should be doing by societal standards.
To me, this song hits home right now. I've always known these lyrics for the last 5 or so years, like many others that touch on the edge of suicide during the traumatic heart break of a long-term relationship. We, as society, push male depression as a negative, and even more-so in the last 4 years. We push those depressed or suicidal away. Right now, I'm a mid-30s man, alone in a house which I've owned. I've been alone for years. I see a friend maybe every few months. I work remotely...whatever hours I make up. Outside of 'not being online for work', no one would know I'm dead.
That's what this song is about.

Being alone. Being so alone, so afraid to say anything. So afraid to try again for the same routine and thinking over and over...should you just...be actually happy,
How much electricity would it take in the bathtub to make me happy.
That's this song.

Stop thinking every song you hear "is about drugs" because you have a drug problem. Most songs involving any darker tone aren't about 'drugs' unless explicitly stated by the artist. Most, especially in this era, were about a potential thought or attempt at suicide. Given early 20s when Pettit wrote this song, it very could have been a song about attempted suicide..or the thoughts that passed through his mind during of which.

Chiodos – Baby, You Wouldn't Last A Minute On The Creek Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
Although I'm sure people actually got this song let's just break it down.

This song isn't about love. It's about screwing up so badly with someone, that they despise you now. And you decide to work with them to just stop this endeavor or personal attack/vendetta. "Baby, you wouldn't last a minute in the creek" is probably a reference to the city. As clearly through the entire song, it's about forgetting about that person, just dropping every issue they have, and just walking away from the issues. Never going back to them, and never revisiting them.
And then just starting over with them.

It's sort of a revenge plot foiled by not wanting to hate someone anymore, so you just try and start over fresh with them.
I'm sure that there could have been a more nuanced and metaphoric story, but unfortunately we don't know it from these lyrics. Maybe it was about a lover or a good friend? Who knows.
But I do know: That it is about forgiveness and forgetting the past, and starting new.

Chiodos – The Words 'Best Friend' Become Redefined Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
So many people don't even understand these lyrics, it's sad because this is the most poetic Chiodos song there is.

This song is about losing a best friend who was an unrequited love. She wasn't just a friend to him...she was, to him, the love he never got to express.

"I've been hiding in this bed for weeks from this
Throats raw from screaming and I haven't said a word
The sky is calling, and the stars, they point to this"

This isn't just the blank meaning, this is nuanced.
He's calling out for help...to no one. He's screaming, internally. His throats sore from mourning the loss. He wants to see her, he's crying out.

"To a chair we see your breath in the air (breath in the air)"
The chair she use to sit in, his childhood best friend. The love who he never got to tell, the girl he looked at all the time when he was on his bed.
"But only for a little while" He never expressed how he felt. He wanted to, but only for a little while.

"Your cold pale skin and tainted purple lips
Let me embrace you with this kiss"
He regrets not just kissing her when he had the chance. He wants to hold her again, and kiss her pale, cold purple dead lips.

"And together we'll float like angels
Together... together we will float like angels"
And they can be together, forever, and be angels in death.
Both a song discussing an unrequited unfortunate dead love...and a potential thought of suicide.

"Higher than the heavens the clouds part ways
"Promise me to never look down!", and we'll stay like this forever"
He isn't experimenting with drugs here. He's hoping that if he died, he can be with her forever, never looking back at this moment and just glad that they're together finally and again.

"If your stomach feels weak, then my work here is done, done
To hide from our twisted ways,
I've been hiding in this bed
Been hiding in this bed for weeks"

The point of the song was to tell people he wants to kill himself to be with her again.
He hasn't left his bed for weeks...because he loved her, and never told her. And he's guilty because she, herself, probably committed suicide.

But sre, let's just compare this song to 'just really losing someone' or 'he just needs her trust'. Or the more common topic in this section from teenagers back then: "his emotions".

No, his emotions aren't a play here. He's feeling horrible that his childhood friend died, and he never told her that he loved her. And he now wishes he could join her, in bitter thought of suicide. And that's the entire point of the last phrase "If your stomach is sick, then my work here is done". He wants to die to be with her...the girl he never got to tell how he felt when he was a kid...before he got to.

And I'm guessing on her committing suicide. Something tragic could have happened, anything really. Unfortunately, no one really decided to delve into this. I wish someone would have back when this came out.

Chiodos – No Hardcore Dancing in the Living Room Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
Another song people never understood. First, sure, it's about not hardcore dancing in the living room, I mean comeon;

But really. Let's talk about the nuance here.
It's not 'just' a failed relationship. It's an abusive one.
People think that "state lines" means long distance. It doesn't.

"I've resolved upon this course, which has no need of you"
The story is being told from 'her' perspective here. She didn't want him anymore. She wasn't interested in him once they went different directions.

"Denying this day, didn't stop it from coming
Promise me, that you won't be consumed when you realize
We're screaming at the same moon"
She's telling him that he can pretend all he wants that he didn't know it was unexpected, but he should of known she wouldn't stand for it anymore.
"We're screaming at the same moon" is probably a direct quote from one of them. They have the same issues with each other. "Why can't they just resolve these then" is what should come to your mind.

"With both eyelids shut and baby, this won't get any easier"
For a long time, this entire part, along with the mouth open, made me think this was about sex.

The full phrase:
"Shredded by state lines
Press my face up against the glass
With both eyelids shut and baby, this won't get any easier"
They're torn between two sides; At an impasse. He is abusive, and is blind by his abuse, possibly verbal as I don't think he's actually smashing her face into the glass. Glasslighting,."This won't get any easier" refers to them continuously failing at trying to make it work.

"Don't let this die, we may never fall in love again
It's hard but worth the wait when it's over"
This is the gaslighting segment. "If you leave, we may never fall in love again. Just stay, please it's hard but it's worth the wait". I even did this to my ex. But the singer portrays a moment of clarity in the lines above -- "State lines". He's done this before, numerous times. "the same moon" is a reference to that they're tired of the same arguments coming up over and over, and him having to do the same sort of gaslighting to keep her.

"Now open up wide, fist first down your throat
Where no beauty lies, and rip out what should've been mine"
He's heart broken, but believes her heart belongs to him. He wants to 'rip her heart out'.

"Comfort always made the rescue, we always hoped 'for the best'
I'll burn this with torches, and drown in my consideration"
Back to the start of this. Gaslighting, manipulation, and ego. He wishes the best on paper, to her face -- but he hopes for her life to burn.

This song isn't about love. It's about lust, being controlling and hoping to maintain a relationship, poised in control and disdain for the others growth. He doesn't want her to leave, so he tries to gaslight her into staying. "State lines" isn't a reference to two different locations or 'long distance'. It's a reference to an impasse. And as he knew the day came when she would finally leave him, he told her he wishes her the best...but he really doesn't mean it. He wishes to watch her fail and burn for leaving him.

Sorry for ruining your childhood. As I ruined my nostalgia and love for the song, in this moment at least, for actually interpreting the lyrics as a mid 30s adult.

Asking Alexandria – Not The American Average Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
Despite reading the more hilariously fucked up comments, it's important to state that even though it clearly is about 'a stupid fucking bitch', this is a bit derogatory.
There's nuance to this story and these lyrics.

The song isn't just about sex, even though it's clearly written as such.

The key is in the one phrase: "One step too late and I never told you".

The story is as follows:
He meets a girl, and the passion is ramping up. Sneak through the backdoor (at first I thought this meant anal). He fucks her with all he's got, as rough as he can, watching her be pleased and watching her love every moment of the engagement. The connection he felt and thought she felt is what is being described.

However, the song is about how it was a one night stand, and he can't take that anymore:
"One step too late
And I never told you
That I can't take
Another disappointment"

Yes, he describes that he had a 'messy ending', but that was a double meaning. Both "cum" and the verbal abuse which he then ensued about her expressing her sexuality.
"Fucking whore/bitch" is his own wrong doing.
Just because a woman wanted sex doesn't mean she wants anything more. And his misunderstanding and why he wrote the song was both to express how he got 'lead on by a one night stand which he'll never forget' and how justifying it as calling 'her a whore' is important. The issue is that she probably isn't one. And she probably wasn't interested in him in any meaningful way, she just wanted a one-time satisfaction. And if I had to guess, this lead to a bit of issues in his life...which is why he wrote:

"What I would give to live this night again
I knew when I first saw you
You'd fuck like a whore"

Clearly, he wanted to have this happen again. And tried numerous times, to be left with the generic response from a guy use to getting what he always gets:
"I see you cold
I feel you heartless
Bitch
You stupid fucking bitch"

To sum that up:
The song is about sex with a girl, which ends up being a one night stand and he doesn't understand why, "I mean he has a 10 inch dick", and so clearly she's heartless and cold because she's not interested in anything more.

But I prefer the lesser nuanced approach: Just a song about rough sex. Because that's truthfully the tone here. There's just an underlying meaning behind the words.

From First to Last – Note To Self Lyrics 4 years ago
2021. I can't believe no one understood these lyrics lol.
This is a "coming of age" song.

It's directed at growing up, and having to decide your life in a way that will split two sides of you; A side that you remember, and a side you will not. The poem by "Robert Frost" comes to mind; Which was very common to be read in schools back when this was written.

This song isn't about drugs or abuse, it's about learning what it's like to love, learning what it's like to do something forbidden at the time. Learning to taste what it's like to feel like a different person; Someone you never were before this happened. Growing up, growing old and being an adult...when you were considered, before, a child.
Coming of age. Losing your virginity, maybe experimenting with homosexuality or bisexuality. Trying and experimenting in new tastes and different aspirations in life...where you feel as if you "lost" yourself.
Note to self, I miss you terrible -- The past you. The you that person can remember, the one before all this came to be.
This is what we call a tragedy -- The story of which the narrator believes is "tragic", losing who they were in adolescents to what appears to be a more adult undertone.

"And my life goes running in opposite directions
Exaggerating the barrier between who I am, and who I want to be"
Robert Frost reference clear as day; Directed at the notion that their life is just splitting, to whom they once were to who they are now...and they are remembering who they were before life took it's course. They "Are" this person, or so they think. Yet, they are doing these things they wouldn't have EVER considered them doing before this poem. I'd bet that the writer wrote this around 10th or 11th grade and utilized it in the song. Especially with the so obvious notes to Frost.

"I wanted to be that breath of fresh air
When everything smelled so insincere
But this taste still lingers in my mouth
Deceit has ways of sticking around
And I'm ready to disappear
Vacation seems far from here"

A metaphor that everyone takes as 'drugs' here. The narrator wanted to be real and 'fresh/new', but everything they did felt fake and disgusting. A lie that they kept up ONLY to fit an image...and they need a vacation to feel the way they use to feel before.

"I can feel my mind, wandering again
Into where I don't know, and will I ever get home?
Time starts moving, faster than I can
And I'm sick of this scene, I need to break the routine"

As the first part of this statement, they are acknowledging that they have changed from who they once were, and they don't feel like they would ever get back their adolescents...who they were before life happened. Before they changed into something they feel is disgusting now. In a way, it also could be of a tragic event (PTSD), however knowing this is a boy writing it, it's more likely teen angst, the feeling of changing who they were before 'this phase' and realizing that it's no longer just 'a phase' and now it became their identity. However, it could be possible that this could be referring to tragic events, all of which conclude to the same end point: They have to decide two roads, one that leads back to who they were, or to who they want to be. And they decide, clearly, to move the direction to who they 'want to be', which is...From First To Last.

"Which part of me is lost?
I feel so close, and yet I am so far
Which part of me is lost?
I feel so close, and yet I am so, far"

They're unsure which direction to go. Which leads to that last sentence I wrote before this.

Asking Alexandria – I Was Once, Possibly, Maybe, Perhaps a Cowboy King Lyrics 4 years ago
2021.
I'm older now, in my 30s. I look back at these sorts of lyrics not just for nostalgia, but for an understanding of others and, more importantly, myself.

This song isn't directly about a "failed relationship" or "cutting".
That's both a metaphor and an allegory.

This song is about failing and being pushed down, so far down that you remember who you were before all of this happened...and even realizing you're nothing. You were and are but a "Monkey in a man suit". You were to be considered, at that moment, a worthless excuse of a Human to that person, a toy; A prop to utilize for someone elses growth. They were once, possibly, maybe, a "cowboy king" in their mind. But as reality sets into the narrator, they realize that they were nothing more than a prop.

The song continues with the trademark metalcore theme; But there's a bit of an underlying message that everyone here doesn't get.

Russian Roulette. How many times can that trigger pull, before it snaps and it's all over? As it writes, scars don't heal when you keep cutting. And instead of stopping what continuously is happening, they keep cutting deeper, always deeper. Until finally, it's over.
It's not "just" a failed relationship. It's a feeling of utter despair, and a constant failure, constantly feeling lesser than, and at that moment they felt like that bullet was the lucky one. That at that point, it went deep enough to leave a scar that will NEVER heal.

Yes, some can call this a relationship. For others, it could be compounded problems that eventually snaps the person. Eventually, that person loses all ability to feel...and that's when and why this music is so deep. This is why music today doesn't feel the same as before. People with actual issues wrote songs, people with abusive families, parents and failed relationships made these lyrics. Not people with millions who decided to joke on reddit and make a 'hustle' out of it.

Chiodos – There's No Penguins In Alaska Lyrics 4 years ago
2021. I'm in my mid 30s. I come back to these songs sometimes for nostalgia...but also because for some reason, I knew I always related to them. Despite closetting my obsession for 'emo' to keep myself in the Metal and metalcore community as a late teen.

15 years later and I revisit this song in a more adult light.
This song is clearly about being lead on, and wanting to rip her intentions apart.
"She loves me, she loves me not.
My love was my decay."
Directed as such: He believes she loves him, he believes she's interested and devoted to him, yet he gets that extra signal after that she's clearly not invested in the same method. An unrequited love, uttered from her words -- as being as intended. It's ripping his emotions apart; How can someone say or act a way, to purposefully play with another's heart? As a teenager or early 20-year-old, this message should have been clear. Yet, it wasn't. Because in our societal bring-up, especially today, we view it as a norm...even the pain as something we should dismiss as "whatever there's others". Sometimes, there is not.

"Never resting time, leads summer on, leads summer on."
Referring to seasons, referring to himself in a different manner. He's the summer, the spring; The flower that blooms, and she, as put deliberately:
"Finding oneself in such murderous shame,
Playing roulette with a flower,"

She's killing the flower because it's fun to watch it bloom and murder it.
The old tale of a girl leading a boy on, only for the purpose of self gratification.
In the age of Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, this has become a far more norm than the age of MySpace and AIM. The only difference today is that we, as a society, grew far too accustomed to play others and utilize selfish needs as "self care" and repurpose their emotions, feelings and health as "a way to grow ourselves".

That's the inevitable downfall of growing up in a capitalists society.
We forget that others matter as much as us, and communication of our own self is just as important as growing internally...and neglecting to do so is just as worse as watching someone die in order to gain more wealth.
