The Beatles – Don't Pass Me By Lyrics 4 years ago
Just forget the whole Paul is dead thing. That is so much bullshit.\n\nAs for this song, there is no deep meaning. It is supposed to be an "american" country western song. But because it was written by a British guy from Liverpool it came out like it did. Sort of like Led Zeppelin doing reggae with D\'yer M\'ker. So you know, it\'s just being silly.

Matthew Sweet – Evangeline Lyrics 4 years ago
Probably my favorite Matthew Sweet "rock" song. It has so many great guitar sounds. The little solo in the middle and "rave out" at the end. And take a listen to way the instruments are mixed. very dry and in your face. hard left and right panning. And one of the guitar parts that blows my mind it right at the end of the intro before the vocal comes in. A harmonic scream that sets up the vocal perfectly.

and on the topic of the actual meaning, it is stated in other comments, it is about a comic book character. A warrior nun who travels with a priest to fight something, I don't know what and set in the future. The singer of the song travels with them and is in love with her.

Neil Young – Powderfinger Lyrics 4 years ago
My friends and I used to sit around talking about this song and yes it seems like the family is involved in something illegal. The white boat is probably Coast Guard. Big John's been drinking since the river TOOK Emmylou, as in something in the river or the river itself is some sort of evil being. Possibly they are indigenous people because in the acoustic version Neil sings "Red MEN run.

The rest seems self explanatory except after the boy is dead there is a harmony when he sings "Shelter me from the powder and the finger" as in when you are dead you join the collective mind of the afterlife.

Plus the guitar solos on the Rust Never Sleeps version are the ones that opened up my mind and ears to Neil's music.

Dire Straits – News Lyrics 4 years ago
As others have put it, it's a guy who likes to live on the edge.

Hunter Thompson wrote in his book about the Hell's Angels that you can take a motorcycle out and take it to the edge, where your life hangs on a thread, and at any moment you could die. That only those who have been there or have gone over know what it's like. The ones that judge their limit wrong end up dead. and make a line in the news.
