| A lot of ridiculous theories about the lyrics of this song, who cares, Earth Wind & Fire just a late 70's funky disco band. I'd rather listen to Kool & the Gang - Celebration, yet both great stuff : ) Listen back, the soul of music, lost but never forgotten..I'm so retro.; ) | |

General Comment if i can put a different spin on this... if you take it from a "love lost" perspective, it's almost a bittersweet memory of being in love, since all the lyrics are in a past tense, it sort of implies that the relationship has ended. the chord progression and the melodies seem quite bittersweet, angsty, i miss you type. especially the high pitched parts, almost wailing out for a lost lover. dunno. just a thought.. >> you're right.: ) |

I think it's a song reflecting on what the author has seen, and relates to the journey of a tormented soul, not hers, but that of a stranger, a man lost within himself., 'A drifter passing by', who has lost his way in life and she describes what she sees him to be. 'He moved with some uncertainty, as if he didn't know, just what he was there for, or where he ought to go'. The author goes on to depict what she has seen or envisioned in a troubled soul, lost, and never quite making it for himself, despite his efforts. 'Once he reached for something golden hanging from a tree, and his hand came down empty' , yet at the same time, displaying empathy and sadness for him. 'It seemed that he had fallen into someone's wicked spell., And I wept to see him suffer, though I didn't know him well'. The rest of it could relate to the vision of the man's saviour, 'As I watched in sorrow, there suddenly appeared, a figure, gray and ghostly, beneath a flowing beard'. The author ends by saying, 'In times of deepest darkness, I've seen him dressed in black', possibly a reflection of her own darkest moments, and is there truly any saviour'. Very deep stuff, but that's the way I interpret it. |
