David Bowie – The Bewlay Brothers Lyrics 3 years ago
Really interesting ideas here. Having been a massive Bowie fan since the early 70s and listening to this song off and on, I now believe it’s simply an experimental poem that he created using his version of William Burroughs and Brion Gysin’s cut-up method. I don’t think the song is meant to have meaning into the conventional sense, it’s more kind of verbal Rorschach test, like an ink blot you can see your own personal paranoia’s reflected in. Taken literally it paints a surreal picture of Bowie’s relationship with his London upbringing, the Bewlay Borthers don’t sound like nice people, perhaps akin to the Cray Twins, some parts a fairly clear, like the references to ‘we’ being the prevailing youth / counterculture of the time, but others allow you to from your own abstract ideas. Personally I think this is what sets Bowie apart from other rockers, in that he doesn’t sell you propaganda, but invites to explore. That’s what makes his songs infinitely interesting. Glad I got to see him in live, best concert ever.
