Soul Asylum – String of Pearls Lyrics 4 years ago
Dave Pirner's greatest lyric i reckon. A narrative of a single pearl broken from a prostitutes necklace. Incorporating a twin headed president, because two heads are better than one, even in one's hands.
Yeah it's about a cycle. An absurd cycle. The pearl ends up with a prostitue.

Death Cab for Cutie – Grapevine Fires Lyrics 4 years ago
Ben at his best.
Had to track this down, searching for his bushfire song, and was surprised to see it titled grapevine fires.
Admittedly had recently watched a doco on Australia's black saturday, but how ben references bits of it; from the north, then winds from the south, and of course that horrible, hopeless realisation that they were lost, how they knew they were gonna burn.

They heard it through the grapevine. Not the fires, no one in those country towns heard that through the grapevine, but you always hear about who's sleeping with who.
That beautiful line about picking up "your" daughter and drinking wine in paper cups as she dances around graves....

I don't know if ben's main inspiration is the black saturday bushfires, but I love the notion that in a country town the grapevine is the 'trusted' communication, yet on that horrible day all communication was cut off or compromised. Nothing was coming down the grapevine, until of course, you look up and see it, and know all is lost

Queen – It's Late Lyrics 4 years ago
Back in early high school my favourite band was Queen.
My mate's favourite band was Pink Floyd.

And we would spend sleep over's trying to educate the other ignorant one why my 1 great band is better than your 1 great band.

Now, even at that nascent age i was somewhat concerned about Queens sometimes flippant use of word or genre, as oppossed to the almost always weighty floyd.

Hence my mate almost in exasperation asks when this was playing
"ok what does it's late but not too late mean?!"

I was amazed that this was one of 2 songs he ever questioned the songmeanings of. Not seaside reandevouz, not the fairyfeller's masterstroke?
It's about a relationship, a failing relationship, her saying it's too late, him saying not yet. It was literal and figurative at the same time, ie same night, go away, it's late, him it's not too late, let me stay.

(the other queen song he questioned/incriminated was 39.
When did the second world war start i retorted?
that shut him up.

little did i know it was about a time travelling space man)

Queen – Sleeping On The Sidewalk Lyrics 4 years ago
Brian May doing a Brian May version of rambling blues,
rags to riches to rags.

What i find interesting on all of News of the World is this sense that fame and riches may be fickle, so know who you really are.

And from all 4 writers;
All Dead All Dead, Sleeping on the Sidewalk, It's Late (May)
Sheer Heart Attack, Fight from the Inside (Taylor)
Spread your Wings, Who Needs You (Deacon)
My Melachonly Blues (Mercury)

Though as i write this i'm not so sure about Freddie. I guess he always had that stupendous and impenetrable belief that they deserve to be great, regardless of the others concerns.

Maybe that's why they stuffed We Will Rock You and We are the Champions at the front?

Thoughts?

Queen – Fight From The Inside Lyrics 4 years ago
Just had a scan of comments but didn't see anything like this; just a thought, reckon it's roger talking about how you can have a say, influence things a bit, adjust the sails up top by fighting down below. Ok bad sailing analogy, but just after deacon's (brilliant) spread your wings we get this, and with surely the greatest bass/sex line he's ever slid up and down against.

But i don't think it's about his groove brother in arms, it's about himself.
Hey you boy, hey you.
The pin up boy.
Is he gonna be another money spinner tool, a fool, or is he gonna attack from the rear (on drums)?
Of course, as all good songs should entail, double meanings, etc, but surprisied this hadn't been mentioned.

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 4 years ago
@[aragond:39213] totally agree mate, the archetypal take down of the media so used to taking down something they can't or won't try to understand or comprehend so dismiss it, and this is coming from a music journo.
By the way if you want a really good update 40 years later check out stereophonics "Mr Writer" about the backstabbing british press, ironically written by a Mr (Kelly) Jones....

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 4 years ago
Speaking as an ex-music journo, yep, this is the archetypal track of a muso/writer denigrating a reporter for their complete lack of understanding/research/respect for an artist/culture/scene etc, but then going away and denigrating said artist/culture/scene anyway.

Bob's obviously referring to the established, mainstream press like Time etc, a very reputable magazine with respected, erudite journalists who may be friends of professors and have read all of F. Scott Fitzgerald etc. but who cannot understand or comprehend the counter culture occuring around them.

As a side note, if you want a really good version approx 40 years later, check out Stereophonic's "Mr Writer", ironically written by a Mr Jones who takes aim at the British music press who used to pretend to be best friends with artists and then totally stab them in the back.
