The song is an expression of total love for the 'boy' of the lyrics. It is also a simple lesson in not trying to be anything other than ones' self, as this is what is most imprtant and is what the singer "couldn't love more if [she] tried". The lyrics evoke the all consuming joy and bliss that comes with realising that one person means absolutely everything to you. No matter what or who else comes into your life. this person, simply as they are, is perfect. "If everyone in the world could give me what I wanted I wouldn't want for more than I have". This line alone sums up the tone and message of the song. It is an confident expression of a devotion so total that thr singer knows full well that nothing could ever replace or supersede it. Even by Sade's standards, this is a masterpiece of a love song. May we all be so lucky to experience a love even half as powerful as the one Sade expresses so exquisitely here. |
