This is a song that has comforted and haunted me all at once since the 80's. It is revealing of the human dilemma; work and fear are essential parts of living. The writers capture this reality in a proverbial manner. Human wisdom but speaking to the essence of who we are as humans. Work and fear are determinants of who and what we are. This captures the meaning of our identity as it goes from the intrinsic to the extrinsic. Our vocation defines us yet it speaks to our inner being although we are much more than what we do. I made a mix of songs in the 80's with China Crisis 'Here Comes a Raincloud' introducing this track. It was a seamless mix. The similarities in the back beats was uncanny. I would listen to this and be comforted. The realize today true comfort is from Christ. Work and the question of who we are is nestled in the reality of creation and who we are created in His image. The writers of these songs may not be Christians but their humanity can't help but express itself in the frailty and transcience of our lives. As we strive to live in this world the need to be connected with our Lord becomes much clearer as we strive onward. Tears for Fears, China Crisis, Simple Minds, Ultravox and other artists from this era and genres were tapping into this phenomonology. They spoke to the core of what it means to be people and the struggles of ordinary life. However, only one can speak to the extraordinary.... Christ Jesus. Life is ongoing sacrifice and dying. However true living is resurrection and this what we all yearn for.... |
