The other writers here who refer to this as as a song about a past or recently-failed relationship make compelling arguments. Even before I read them, i intuited this song was something of this nature just by virtue of the line “Everything I say to you is going to come out wrong anyway”. Pinback doesn’t often write lyrics that address emotionality so directly. But the thing that hooked me about it is the final verse. “Near my house/In no seconds/Count the footsteps/Count the seconds”. Wow. That’s the tear-inducing moment for me. Because I’ve had experiences like that - suddenly afflicted by an overwhelming grief and having to get to the safety of home and privacy before losing it. Maybe the other person was there in the trolley car, or maybe the trolley just passed her place, or maybe a memory just became overwhelming. The way Rob raises his voice an octave to give emphasis singing it a second time gives me chills. One of Pinback’s best. |
