So relevant still, what ideals does the United States stand for now? The platitudes of the national anthem and ideals of the Constitution ring hollow when you see the reality on the ground, "the Vietnams" (plural intended) that destroy so much at the expense of supposed "democracy." Browne wrote as a young man seeing the real gap between the ideals of the US and the reality, and unfortunately that gap just seems to have grown larger in the years since this song was written. |

Time triumphs over everything and it is better to have faith in the part of you that time cannot kill. There is nothing to lose, and one must let go of the fear of living for nothing. Time is the fuse that is constantly burning and causing those towers to crumble. The song presents idyllic imagery and a satisfaction with simplicity. Happiness comes from an appreciation of simple things such as lighting a fire, placing flowers in a vase. The images bring to mind still lifes, a meditation on beauty that doesn't need a great big mansion. Happiness can be found in a trailer, as long as you're with the person you love. Life is in harmony.
The musical elements of the song are genius, bringing to mind the harmony and melodic content of the Beatles. "An ode to countercultural domestic bliss", written in 1970, the influence of the British invasion cannot be denied. |
