Parliament – Flash Light Lyrics 1 year ago
FayeKane apparently thinks this entry is about the meaning of "Bop Gun" -- they did a pretty good job of describing that song! . But the song in question is actually "Flash Light".

It's not a difficult song; the song is about finding the Funk, as superlou correctly pointed out.

@[Bill_T:50808] Methinks you're thinking of B.B. King's guitar(s) --

The Allman Brothers Band – Melissa Lyrics 1 year ago
@[Nilmerf:50807] The other two responses here before mine are completely true-- it's an old, old song -- the very first one Gregg says he wrote that was actually good (hundreds before that were bad, he's said). Duane loved it, and probably one of the reasons why it was included on Eat a Peach, after Duane's death is a little tribute TO Duane, because it WAS his favorite (there are many articles/interviews online with Gregg stating this, btw, not hard to find. That's why he also played it at Gregg's funeral.

I'm assuming maybe the reason it hadn't been used on their records before that was it is a bit mellow for the band, a bit different in feel/style (i.e. not bluesy) and I also gather from what I've read that even though Gregg and Duane had done a demo of it in '67 for a different band of theirs, by the time of their record contract, they had so many other songs (some from Gregg, and also many from Dickey) that it sort of got pushed back. Duane never forgot it though -- Gregg says after dinner, many nights, Duane would ask Gregg to grab Gregg's acoustic and play it for him "that song about that girl"....I'm sure they would've wound up re-recording it at some point even if Duane had lived...it's just too good of a song to not do something with. And as the band matured, they were starting to branch out, style-wise, exploring new sounds, moods, textures, etc...

@[joekerr21:50806] In fact there are also interviews online with Gregg -- including one w/ with Dan Rather I just watched --- in which he tells pretty much this same grocery store story. I'd also read it somewhere years ago too. I'd say this pretty much puts it to bed.
The funny part is when he heard "Oh Melissa, where are you?", Allman had that "Eureka!!" moment that musicians and other creatives can get sometimes, and was so freaking happy he said he nearly kissed this stranger ("probably would've had me arrested, had I done it!"), as he realized he finally had the name...and the song was complete.
As for what happens in the song, the meaning of it, in other interviews he's explained that he felt lonely on the road, being away from home, etc -- this person "Melissa" represents what he says he sort of wished for -- that stability and love that was absent then.

Blonde Redhead – Messenger Lyrics 2 years ago
@[juror8:48669] yup! As much as I adore Blonde Redhead, I’ve always felt the same about David Sylvian— especially his 80s solo work. His voice singing a BH melody is almost too much awesomeness to behold… my mind almost snapped! What pipes that guy has…

Voivod – Tribal Convictions Lyrics 2 years ago
I can't believe there aren't more comments about this fantastic song (one of Voivod's very best, imo, even after all these years!)....hoped there'd be more takes, as I'm not sure of some things. I agree with Edmundo that it's basically about religion/belief....particularly "primitive" faiths, but there also seems to be something in there about it all being witnessed by some...entity? I never looked closely at the lyrics written down, but from hearing the song numerous times over the decades, it seemed like it was maybe about a time traveller seeing these rituals (dancing around fire, etc). It doesn't explicitly say "time travel," but that's how these lines have always hit me: "I've just arrived Like a flash in the dark, My life has been Lit up like a spark"
Someone from another dimension...? or the future? Also "I've just got here".

The idea of someone from some other plane of existence just flashing into such a scene to me gives the song a sort of mysterious awe...

Anyway, I've never fully got the "Are there any forces/Are there two faces/
Are there some chances" part. Ideas...?
