To me, the song is about triumphing over envy. About discovering that it's not maleness or masculinity they were seeking but a feeling of self efficacy and freedom and self expression, validation, about a lack of shame that they previously conceived could only come with a male experience. "I'm a man now And I won't let you steal it I bought it for myself I'm a man now" I think those lines are key. As well as this one: "She wants to be a man, a man But she lies She wants to be born again, again" She as an artist as achieved sublime self expression and accolade. And she earned it by creating her own mold rather than trying to fit in. |
