Anthem was a novella by Ayn Rand about a couple escaping a collectivist dystopia to lead their lives freely.
Ayn Rand developed objectivism, which purports that by helping ourselves we help others indirectly, i.e. wealthy businessmen create a lot of jobs, buying things we want/need helps the people selling them, striving for selfish goals makes us work better to gain status in a mostly capitalistic society, etc. Hence, the "live for yourself" line.
I think the meaning of the song is along those lines, but I don't really understand the meaning of the "Anthem of the heart" chorus. |
