| Leonard Cohen – Dress Rehearsal Rag Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
I listened repeatedly to the original song by Leonard Cohen and the version by Judy Collins. It struck me as the darkest, most profound songs I had ever heard, although I was completely baffled by the title and the ending. The mention of the Rosicrucians sent chills down my spine, as I had clipped a coupon from a magazine and joined the organization as a naive youth in search of hope. After about two years of pondering its meaning, I had an epiphany, and am now convinced I understand it. While most of the reviewers think it is about a rehearsal for a suicide, I believe it is about an actual suicide. At the end of the song, the protagonist awakens in the afterlife, and views his past life as a mere "dress rehearsal" for whatever comes next. I don't know if Cohen was a believer in reincarnation, but I strongly suspect that he was. |
