At one point, after fan-girling about Bowie for a while (Halloween costume and all), my young, inexperienced, NOT born before 1972 mind realized something. Oh. My. God. David Bowie was a pop star. He got fan fiction and fan mail. 60s-looking girls crowded around his apartment and venues, and cried when they had been waiting for hours and still not seen him. I had always assumed Bowie concerts were a cult-like and dangerous event, and you couldn't get out without being high. But girls, dressed in a conservative sweater and skirt, went to these? Normal kids went to these and obsessed over his photos like me? But now they like stuff like Justin Bieber and Post Malone (just see how un-trendy I am)? Fangirls in the 70s had taste? Now, all of you adults know this. And all of you kids don't care about Bowie. But I love him. And if my jerky friend who told me he was hideous and his music sucked was from the 70s, I would have a better argument than, 'Oh, those aren't the best photos. I'll find you some better ones.' Sorry for all the personal stuff on a song MEANINGS site. |

The literal definition of this song is that there's this explorer who dreams of going to heaven. Or, a person fed up with land, and longs for the sea. And I'm just guessing that this is what this song is about. But seriously, people! The Laughing Gnome has ten times more comments on it than this. |

This song is very much from the perspective of a band member, which lead me to think this: David Bowie was playing the part of a Spider from Mars, which broke up after Ziggy Stardust, the guitarist, either died or left the band because the fans were really getting to him, then re-formed and played some of the old Spiders songs, plus an original song (this one). It's a stretch, but unless you want to think of Bowie breaking character mid-show, it fits. I know Bowie has said otherwise, so it's probably not true, but it almost works. |

| I think (and this is only my opinion, I'm not David Bowie or anything) that the singer is a bisexual man who started to date a girl and so dumping his boyfriend (Henry). His boyfriend keeps trying to get in touch, but the singer keeps on avoiding him, saying, "You're only a friend," (droogie (friend in 'A Clockwork Orange'), "No, you can't even stay here as a friend" (don't crash here), "I like girls now", (I'm back on Suffragette City (I'm for girls now, because a suffragette is a women's rights activist), and "Don't stay with me, because you may get arrested," (Don't lean on me man, 'cause you can't afford the ticket (maybe it's referring to 'moral indecency' in the 60s?)) This is all pure speculation, and even while I'm putting it down here, it sounds pretty abstract, and of course I'm the only straight teen mega-Bowie fan who is typing this listening to disco on her MP3 player, so I'm probably not an expert on this in any way. So, sorry, it's probably wrong, but I do think this is what that song's about. | |
