I think this song is about fucking like rats. Heaving, deep craving, writhing, seething wet, lay down flat, yes yes yes yes... with the rhythms building to an orgasmic crescendo, even in the version with just Syd on guitar. I think the other lyrics just add to the primitive, visceral mood. Sexy AF |

I like to think of this song as a tongue-in-cheek, absurdist way of getting in one more song to appease the record company. Whatever it means, it's lovely. I think "steel rail" could refer to the American folksong "Long Steel Rail." It's played on a banjo, which Syd had as a kid. |

I've seen these interpretations also of the "and the leader is seen" section: --- and the leader is seen So early/Swirling/Curling the pack on their backs the fighters/biters --- To me this song is about war, comparing armies with magnesium bombs (used in WW2) to vicious animals leaving their dead behind them. The tightly metered rhythm sounds like a military anthem. I hear the different words sung in the layered vocal tracks, reinforcing the analogy: So early = an army at dawn, Swirling/Curling = the movement of predatory wolves. And/or the dangerous potential of conformity and groupthink. Definitely a passionate, visceral, affecting composition. |

@[Black:34119]&GreenAchilles I agree, it's "seems to be all on" I love how Syd's lyrics can be read differently and it's always lovely. |

To me this song is about his girlfriend and longtime friend Jenny Spires who dated him as he was starting Pink Floyd and later lived with him after the band split. The tender lyrics express his gratitude for her grounding presence and how he missed her when she moved to the US. https://www.eyeplug.net/magazine/in-conversation-with-jenny-spires-by-michelle-coomber/ I don't think it was about his bandmates; from what I have read, most of them helped him with his solo career, Gilmour in particular. They only stopped including Syd after he steadily chose not to engage in the band. I feel Syd used drugs to ease the angst of burnout and toil of touring 'til he no longer took pleasure from what had been his dream. It's a feeling I understand from my own experience of burnout along my own path and a longing for connection, belonging and tenderness. I also read that Syd wanted to be a painter, and he certainly was, not just with paint but also brilliant, evocative wordplay and sublime arrangements. I'm happy that he found contentment in his art despite the early turmoil. Meanwhile, I have long enjoyed the music of Robyn Hitchcock, who as a young adult was deeply inspired by Syd. I just came across this fan's compilation of Robyn's acoustic covers of Syd's music. https://albumsthatshouldexist.blogspot.com/2019/09/robyn-hitchcock-acoustic-syd-barrett.html |
