'I thought I saw the devil this morning, looking in the mirror-' This is how I'll Be Good starts out. This part of the song means that when Jaymes was looking in the mirror, he saw himself as the devil, someone who was always mean and hurt others. 'I never meant to start a fire, I never meant to make you bleed, I'll be a better man today-' This means that Jaymes never meant to hurt anybody, he was just so used to being himself that he never noticed he was hurting others until recently. Now that he knows what he's doing, he wants to become a better person. 'I'll be good, I'll be good, and I'll love the world like I should-' The chorus is literally explaining that Jaymes wants to be better, that he's trying to be better, and that he's trying to be a good person. The second verse explains why he was acting the way he was and why he was being so mean. The part between the end of the second chorus and the last chorus is Jaymes saying all of the things he had done wrong that he wanted to fix. |

Personally, I love this song. Its one of my favs. I feel like this song has a really simple meaning: The singer is madly in love with someone, and when the person is not around, he feels sad and wants the other person to be with him. The part when he sings, "Every time your not in my arms, I start to lose myself," makes me think that when the other person is not around, he feels like part of him is missing. And also, the part when he sings, 'Someone please pass me my shades, don't let 'em see me down, you have taken over my days," makes me think that he's trying to hide what big of an impact this person has on him. Later in the song he sings how "I pretend the night is so beautiful," meaning that he's pretending to be OK for the sake of everyone else, but inside, he's dying because he can't see the person he's so madly in love with. |

I haven't watched the video yet (although I probably should) but when I first heard this song, I thought of two people who had been in a relationship, but they aren't together anymore. The singer feels like they let the other person down by doing something wrong, and although they don't want to care for them anymore, they still want them to be happy. The part when he sings, "No, but at least your happy," makes me think that even though they're still apart, and that he doesn't want to be with the other person, he still wants the other person to be happy no matter what. He gave everything to them, and they just ignored him and hurt him. He doesn't want them to feel the pain that he had, so he put up with the other person and tried to make them happy. He feels like he let them down because he feels like he's failing at trying to make them happy. The part when he sings, "I wish that I could say I'm proud, I'm sorry that I let you down," makes me think that he should be proud that he's trying, but he's still sorry that he's not making anything any better. |
