It is a love affair that she feels she has to end but she can't. They know it's selfish and yet it's been worth it. They know it will end at some point but for now they keep coming back to each other. "'Cause you are the piece of me I wish I didn't need If our love is tragedy, why are you my remedy? If our love's insanity, why are you my clarity?" They both feel more fulfilled and content with life being together and yet, because it's an affair, they know it's wrong (i.e., a tragedy/insanity) and they wish they didn't need each other to be happy. "Don't speak as I try to leave 'cause we both know what we'll choose If you pull then I push too deep and I'll fall right back to you" She's tried to leave and end it many times even though neither of them wants to end it (i.e., they know they will choose to stay together). He's plead for her to stay and each time she's fallen back to him and they end up staying together. |

A song about perhaps a first night together, a one-night stand, a forbidden love. A night away from reality. It is just them. Nothing else exists. "And I'll meet you somewhere in the milky night Away past the satellites" One night together. The "milky night past the satellites" is where they meet far away from their homes and their reality; just them. "Where all our secrets melt like ice Leaving only water Night will close us down And change the view" They are in a place where reality and the outside world don't exist, their secrets melting like ice. Night falls, changing the view, creating a moment, just them in that moment. Everything fades away: reality, the world outside, even who they. "Say my name aloud And make it new And I'll promise you what I can I forget myself when I'm with you" They make love, enveloped in each other. They are not themselves. They are one. "Day so soon, hear all the traffic move The sirens all fill this room till we both have to shout From the road, watching the stars explode You and I breathe so slow How strange the sound" Daylight comes. Traffic, sirens, reality hits. The stars explode shaking them back to reality, ending that moment. They breathe slow, trying to take back that moment and yet, how strange the sound, they don't recognize each other back in their reality and back in the real world. |

It's about two people who are deeply in love with each other but one of them feels they cannot or should not be together. Perhaps it's a love affair. Perhaps their love is taboo. "Now I know it is time to move on And I know that I should forget you now But I can't change, no The way I feel about you" In the example of an affair, she feels she has to end it because affairs are bad and wrong, but she still loves him. The words and the way she sings them so clearly show that she doesn't want to end it but feels she has to. She knows their affair is wrong so she knows it's time to move on. She knows she should forget him, but does she want to? No, she doesn't because she still loves him. She can't change the way she feels, her love, for him. She keeps repeating this throughout the song because she knows she should leave, despite his pleading for her to stay. "I cannot seem to reach you Although you're so close now I'm moving 'round in circles Come to me" They love each other. They are so close but she's started withdrawing because she knows she has to end it. He's trying to understand why she's withdrawing. "I cannot understand this The change in your emotions And why you cannot love me The way I am" They had/have a deep love. He's confused about what changed and why she's trying to end it. He's wondering if it's because of him. The thing is, nothing's changed. She still loves him deeply but isn't being honest about how she feels and why she's leaving. She has to act like she no longer cares or no longer loves him. If she allows him to know her true feelings, that she still loves him, it'll be harder for her to leave. This song, the lyrics, the way they both sing and speak to each other is so heartbreaking. You can feel the deep love and the deep pain. |
