A Perfect Circle – The Contrarian Lyrics 2 years ago

It's ironic that you mention that they (politicians) all lie; one of the greatest lies is that both sides are the same. It's easy to throw up your hands and not pay attention, and that's exactly what they're hoping for. You're right that we can't rely on politicians to get us out of this mess - that we must do it ourselves. The first step is to pay attention to what is actually being said and done, then take a stand for something - anything - that makes this world a better place.

That's the whole point of the album. These songs aren't just an exercise in cynicism.

@[yoTIMyo:44172] There are a lot of songs out there that are about drugs, drug use, and death by overdose. This ain't one of them.

In general, the song is about the opportunistic nature of the entertainment industry taking advantage of the gullible and those with low self-esteem. The cynical outlook of the narrator boils down to believing his victims deserve the treatment he's doling out if they are so weak minded as to let him take advantage of them. Sex, violence, sensationalism - anything to get ratings and make a cheep buck. Who cares about the human toll?

Stone Temple Pilots – Adhesive Lyrics 5 years ago
Many people here have noted how this song deals with depression... What has not been said is how it speaks to the effect the entertainment industry (record industry in particular, but also entertainment in general) that the whole album seems to be critiquing. This album came out shortly after the death of Kirk Cobain. It seems that Scott Weiland is saying "I'm suffer from depression and I'm at odds with my own fame just as much as Kirk was. That could have been me."

In specific, this song is about the complex emotions and depression that comes from being famous. While most of the lyrics are highly symbolic, a few are rather direct: "Sell more records if I'm dead: Purple flowers once again: Hope it's sooner: Hope it's near corporate records' fiscal year"

In the next line, he laments the fundamental misunderstanding of what is being said in his lyrics: "Have a listen lend an ear: Here's a song now if ya care: We can all just hum along: Words don't matter anymore." Broadly, it is about depression, but the context of the depression is worth understanding... if only because that was the point he was trying to drive home.
