@[TasChiBandGirl:33880] When REM was at their height, people were not "coming out" as easily and readily as today. But rumors of homosexuality followed Stipe around, pretty much from the beginning of their airplay. I've never really understood this song. It is extremely vague. The best love songs and the best love is always laid out in the open. I think hindsight now, may add way more to your interpretation, as well as give your thoughts more credence. |

| R.E.M. – Strange Currencies Lyrics | 5 years ago |

It's definitely a great song about unrequited love. However, I believe the key to understanding the song is more in the title itself. Whenever most of us think of currency we understand either money or electrical current. If the title clues us to the latter, then we should make the association with the two types of currency: AC and DC. The term AC/DC has long been associated with folk that swing both ways. It was the 70s rock band Sweet that had a song entitled AC/DC. The lyrix to that tune start off thus: She got girls, girls all over the world. She got men every now and then. But she can't make up her mind On just how to fill her time But the only way she can unwind A. C. D. C. She's got some other lover as well as me A. C. D. C. She's got some other women as well as me I think he is offering a love that might seem strange to the person he is pursuing. While Strange Currencies ranks as one of the top 3 REM songs for me, I am unsure I would ever try to manipulate a heterosexual with it. Personally, one of the reasons I don't put it on any of my play lists, etc. Alone, I will gladly crank it up and enjoy the angst and power and vocals and melodic instruments. Not homophobic here, can appreciate great music by anyone, but the sexual content of the song is not any path I pursue or would want anyone thinking that I do. |
