This album was written around they time they were expirimenting with shrooms, which makes a lot of sense when you listen to the lyrics and some of the ambience they added. Really amazing album |

To me, this song could take on multiple meanings. Originally, I took it as Smith looking back on his life, and seeing that he was in a better place than he used to be, sort of reassuring us that he's alright, however I've always taken the reverse guitar at the ending to be some kind of indication that he was lying this whole time and putting on a ruse. If you look at it in real time, rather than reminiscent, the top comment about depression and relationships being a way out, but dipping back into the depression and not knowing what to do is very insightful and I think is another meaning this song has. Lastly, if we look at it from a drug perspective, Elliot does have a history for including drugs in his songs, and I presume this one to be looking at Heroin, which was also one of the main topics of King's Crossing which is on the same album. The "ugliness" is most likely being sober and depressed, and feeling "pretty" is when high, and away from the depression. Probably one of the reasons Smith was such a genius is because his songs all have multiple possible interpretations, most famously Between The Bars. Sort of a folk approach to writing seen with Jackson C. Frank, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, and many others. But yea, just my thoughts |
