In between Blender (2000) and Youth (2004), Collective Soul went through some dark times. I hear they recorded nearly a complete album of dark and angry tracks about this time, but scrapped the project in favor of an album that reflected the band seeing the light at the end of the storm. So, many tracks on Youth still reflect this time but in more abstract, positive imagery. I hear Counting the Days is one of these songs. Perhaps it's about the divorces Ed and Dean Roland both went through. They're waiting for the legal chains to break. Or perhaps it's about their guitarist Ross and how he backstabbed Ed, but Ed and Ross were still tied together through legal contracts. Ed's counting down the days when their contracts are over and their free to operate independently. It could even represent the brand's 7 year legal contract with Atlantic Records (1994-2001). I hear their manager took a lot of their money and they brought him to court. |

In my diagnosis, the narrator of the song called the girl he was dating "a bad bad," which means she was unfaithful. So, he's considering leaving her after she cheated on him. But, he still loves her and she's not making it easy for him to call it quits. She still wants to work on their relationship. Her "love would he too much" artistically expresses what it's like for someone to strongly fight for your love even though they've broken your trust. |
