I think this song is merely an exercise for Melody’s unique, angst-ridden voice. Beautifully done, it evokes emotion with meaningless lyrics.

I suspect this song is simply a nice melody to explore her unique vocalizations and range. The melancholy lyrics do not seem to have any deep significance. That being said, I really like this song which I only recently discovered. I may have heard it briefly long ago and had no interest in it then. I was not a fan in her heyday, as I was sick of constantly hearing her roller skate song on the radio. Ugh!

I’ve read that she recorded this song after her beloved brother passed from AIDS. She definitely took a dark path with this version. And Billie Holiday’s producers demanded the extra verse about “I was only dreaming” because the original was just too depressing for radio at that time...and probably still is.

I’ve always felt this song is about universal dispar at the end of days...as in an apocalypse that has already begun. We’re all soon headed for the cold, cold ground. Lovely and depressing, but that’s Tom.
