I was informed that this song was written about Stings ex girlfriend Meg. He talks about her in his memoir “Broken Music” and a person I know who studies him told me that this song is about her. They dated in their teens, Deb was his first girlfriend, but then he met Meg and fell in love with her. They were in a relationship, it turns out she got pregnant with his child, but her father didn’t approve and forced her to have an abortion. I can imagine it was very devastating for both of them!! In this song, he must be imagining a scenario where he gets rid of the Dad who broke them apart and forced her to abort their baby. It is so sad!! What’s odd to me is that thirty years after this song was released, he wrote his musical “The last ship” where Meg is the main female character, and Gideon, I’m assuming is young Gordon Sumner. Although TLS reveals the death of the shipping industry where he grew up, the story also revolves around these two. I’m guessing Meg must’ve been the girl who got away. Of course, I can imagine when there’s a very traumatic experience around what happened, that would definitely leave a major mark in your soul. But if she still haunts him to this day, that tells me he never got over her... but why, if she’s so important, did he not come for her much sooner? Maybe the trauma of the father and the abortion was too much, but after he made it, he could have reconnected with her, heck, even when he was a teacher, he could have. It could be her father poisoned her mind about him and she kinda put it all behind her and forced herself to move on? But as much as he loves his wife who he’s been with for many many years, he never got over this girl. Not when you write songs like this and a musical staring her in it? Much of his inner feelings is revealed in that musical. I just wonder if he ever tried to reconnect and reconcile? I wonder if she ever did especially after his success? I’m sure her father must be kicking himself after the fact and felt stupid for what he did. But if she was such a big deal? You’d think they’d reconnect at some point or at least there’d be something about her reappearing? I’m sure she spoken to people about her relationship with him as teens? So I have to believe that a death occurred. It’s either a physiological death or possibly a physical one. |
