Elliott Smith – Dancing on the Highway Lyrics 5 years ago
Recently, there has been a video posted on YouTube by a woman who shared about her relationship with Elliott. In the video, she explained how they met in LA, and that they were really close friends. She even was in the studio when he was recording XO, and went to numerous shows with him. Eventually, Elliott had broken up with his girlfriend, and he was in love with this woman. She claimed that she didnt want to get in the way of his music career, and didnt want to chase him around. They stopped seeing each other I guess, and that's the end of it.

She didnt find out until after Elliott passed away, but Elliott wrote the song "In The Lost And Found" about her. It's clear that Elliott had very strong feelings for this woman.

So now that we know that, what song was at the end of "In The Lost And Found"? That little riff that was in "Dancing On The Highway". So, we can safely assume that these songs were supposed to be tied in with each other on the record "Figure 8".

Now, when we look at the lyrics of "Dancing On The Highway", it matches up very well with the story that this woman told about her relationship with Elliott, and how it ended. The lyrics are clearly about a lost love, and having to cope with it. It sounds like he struggled with having to let go of his past with her.

The part that makes me believe this the most is the line, "look at what I can do with empty time". The whole reason why this woman left Elliott is because he was constantly on the road, and busy with his music career.

Also, the line "Your sun still burns my eyes. Oh why?" Is probably the most sincere and heart breaking lyric I have ever heard.

It very fascinating to know this information while listening to these songs. I could only imagine how many other songs he wrote about her on "Figure 8" and such. Very interesting stuff here.

Elliott Smith – No Confidence Man Lyrics 5 years ago
I'm pretty sure that the "rubber loop" is referring to a belt, that Elliott was beaten with by his step father. I think that saying it means that it is a condom is a pretty far stretch (pun intended).

This whole song seems like a description of Elliott's life when he was being abused by his step father Charlie. There are descriptions of verbal and physical abuse in this song. The line "just act natural" kills me every time. It just broadens the emotion of fear, and makes the listener feel like they are in an unsafe situation at home.

Also, the whole "wake up your friend" part makes me think of fleeing the house because it is unsafe, and not wanting to stay at home.

Just my thoughts on the lyrics. Very haunting song. Also very underrated.
