I have always viewed this song as being deeper than simple emotional output. From an artistic standpoint, this song on the outside may denote a sense of apathy and self-destruction as noted below, however upon looking at the symbology of the song, I have deduced that this song is more closely aligned with childhood trauma. Perhaps sexual abuse and or violence. We can see this in the first verse, where he speaks about “the eyes of a child now in ruins” followed by “my voice wasn’t loud enough for you to listen” and “I feel your love has always been empty” often referring to children who have experienced this trauma. Furthermore, the representation of the Treehouse as a whole can be viewed as a safe place for seclusion and reflection of these traumas. |
