Talk Talk – It's My Life Lyrics 5 years ago
>Funny how I find myself in love with you

He whimsically reflects on how he didn't expect to fall in love

>If I could buy my reasoning I'd pay to lose

If he had the opportunity to pay to find out how he got himself into this situation, he'd actually pay to avoid finding out instead

>One half won't do

Because he doesn't want to be half of a relationship. He wants to feel whole.

>I've asked myself, how much do you
>Commit yourself
>It's my life, don't you forget
>It's my life, it never ends (It never ends)

In the past he's addressed himself directly, attempting to delude himself because he's scared of losing his independence:

"I've asked myself 'How much do you commit yourself?' It's my life! Don't you forget! It's my life. It never ends!"

He's pondered how committed he should be to someone else. He reminds himself that his life is his own property and finds solace in his comfortable delusion that he will live forever because it convinces him he has no need for external comfort.

>Funny how I blind myself, I never knew
>If I was sometimes played upon, afraid to lose

He ponders the way he blinds himself, realizing that he "played upon" himself (meaning he used his fear of death and impermanence to emotionally manipulate himself) because he was "afraid to lose" his independence.

>I'd tell myself, what good you do
>Convince myself
>It's my life, don't you forget
>It's my life, it never ends (It never ends)

The first line here is wrong. "What good you do" makes no sense. Listen to the song. He says "I tell myself 'What could you do?'".

So again, he's desperate to find a method to maintain his independence by reminding himself that his life is his own, and deluding himself that he will live forever.

>I've asked myself, how much do you
>Commit yourself?
>It's my life, don't you forget
>Caught in the crowd, it never ends

He feels "caught in the crowd", highlighting his unwillingness to open himself up to the chaos and uncertainty of interacting with others because it potentially puts his independence in jeopardy.

A deeply honest song exploring a brief moment in the mind of a young man standing on the life changing precipice of an early relationship, by a great songwriter and astonishingly expressive singer.
