I think this song is meant as words of encouragement when fighting through your darkest times. It's interesting to me that the two settings mentioned are dreams and the world. The lyrics describe the inner world as dark ("bad dreams") and the search is for the daylight, whereas the outer world is described as good ("a cool world") and the goal is to avoid the cruel things. So to me the lyrics encourage one to search for their inner light and avoid the cruel things that they may face in the outer world. "Nothing like a big bad bridge to go burning through" is about the process of finding the light within you or becoming aware of the cruel things around you and beginning the fight against the things in your inner and outer worlds that had been holding you down. There's nothing wrong with having to burn these bridges down, no matter how big they've become in your life. Of course it's tough when you don't have many other bridges or any good bridges to keep, but I think that's the point of the song. When you're in a deep low, the process of changing and fighting to rebuild the good things in your life is tough, and that's okay. I'm not fully convinced on what the title may mean, apart from symbolizing how the pain and struggle experienced during one's darkest times can feel. The haunting and echoey sound gives me a feeling of loneliness, as in it is ultimately you who must face the darkness inside of you and the cruel things around you. Nobody can do that for you. As moody and anguished as the song sounds, I think its meaning is more positive and about holding on while you fight against the bad things in your life to rebuild and strengthen the good things. |
