There are multiple biblical references in this song. So you need to know the basics: The story of Job is basically this good man who believes in god and does everything as he is expected to. Satan says Job's only being good because god cares for him , so god says "ok I'll let you break him" to test if he remains loyal to god. So Job is broken again and again until he's just a heap on the dirt. But Job keeps his faith saying "god did this for some reason which I'll never know". And then god lifts Job back up as a reward for his loyalty and gives him even more than he had before. Basically it's a directive to "keep the faith" even when it gets unbearable. Being "saved" refers to taking Jesus into your heart as your savior and only then can you go to heaven instead of hell. So again, "just believe" and you'll get something good in the end. Jesus was created by god to bridge the gap between mortal humans and the perfect divinity of god. That's why he's made by god, but lives as a normal person. He acts as an example for how people should live in the face of temptations and other bad things that may happen. So again, just be good and good things will come to you. Ok, so the lyrics start off by saying the world is crap and it is designed to break you. You work hard and you just end up getting smashed like a pumpkin. But Billy is going to just keep on keeping on just like old Job. Why? Why is he going to keep going? Because as mad as he gets about it, nothing ever changes. Despite his rage he's always trapped in that cage. He's accepting his fate and the fact that no matter what he does he gets smashed again. "Someone will say what is lost can never be saved." A little cryptic. Did someone lose hope that he will ever pull himself out and be a good person? "That Billy is just a lost cause. He's on the highway to hell." Or maybe he means once you lose something that you value, it never comes back. I think with the biblical themes it's likely the former. The people you hope will save you just give up on you - cuz the world sucks. It goes with the overall theme of the song, I think. So now he's naked. Can he fake it for another show? Direct reference to old Job again. Just believe - even though you have every reason to give up. Certainly a reference to being beaten down by the music industry but hoping it will all work out if he just keeps performing. He wants things to change. And then he asks you, the listener, what you do in those situations. Tell me I'm the only one Tell me there's no other one Jesus was an only son, yeah Tell me I'm the chosen one Jesus was an only son, for you Ok, so this section is more biblical stuff. Jesus was a solitary man created by god to save men, more or less. So he basically sacrifices himself for the benefit of mankind. I think Billy is potentially trying to liken himself to Jesus in that he feels like he's sacrificing himself for the industry and his fans and the money, etc. Tell me I'm the chosen one. Someone's basically saying to Billy that they need him to keep performing and creating music and doing things he doesn't seem to want to do for the benefit of everyone else. He's being drained by the world because the world is a vampire. That's my take on it. And after all of this he says he still thinks he cannot be saved. Meaning after all of this sacrifice and being trampled by the world, he thinks he's not going to be rewarded in any meaningful way. He's not going to be saved. He'll just be forgotten and discarded. | This is a song about gloves. One day, Gene was getting tired (lay me down to rest) while feeding his pet anaconda and it bit his hand (snakes alive and it's ready to bite). He immediately thought, "I should be wearing gloves." So he walked to the store (girl lemme in), passing a hornet nest along the way, and the nice lady behind the counter helped him try on various gloves in the windowless back room (where the sun don't shine).
