Here is my interpretation: *Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence* The speaker of these words is troubled by a dream which is described as follows: *In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence* The person saying the lyrics was lost in thought, perhaps in a dream (or perhaps just thinking) that he was alone, cold and damp, lost in his own thoughts, seemingly depressed when suddenly he was disturbed by the neon light (which represents commercialism and superficiality). *And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence* In the dream he was in a place like Times Square ... all these people who aren't really connecting with anyone or even connecting with reality, humanity, other people. People not listening to each other or talking to each other...And no one dares to really connect with other humans in a real way. *"Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence* The disturbing dream makes the dreamer think about this isolation, people not connecting... And the man is noticing that this silence, this inability to connect, the isolationism just taking us away from our humanity. And he cannot reach people with this message because no one is listening. And he wishes that he could connect with people but his words and thoughts don't reach anyone. EVERYONE IS LOST IN THEIR OWN ISOLATION. *And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls In tenement halls" And whispered in the sounds of silence* People accept this superficiality and commercialism as reality. Money and THINGS represented by the neon lights (entertainment, products, liquor) ... and the neon light that split the night made the man think about things he has seen written on subway walls and tenement halls... WHICH ARE MOSTLY WRITTEN BY PEOPLE WHO ARE DISTURBED AND UPSET, LONELY AND ISOLATED... people who want to speak out and connect but for some reason have no one they can connect with. Tens of thousands of people in the street in Times Square or somewhere, but no one to connect with... Everyone is isolated in their own bubble of illusion, of materialism, of loneliness... It's a sad song because it is about feeling isolated and alone and not connecting with other people ... needing someone to connect with, but unable to make a connection, feeling alone and depressed. The version of the song by Disturbed is as good as the original, which is rare. But I still prefer the original. |
