Talk Talk – It's Getting Late In The Evening Lyrics 5 years ago
Song environment just after the Saturday or Sunday party during the relaxed cleanup phase. Jazz is on, folks are chilling, deciding what's next...

agree with you so completely on this. it's a wrench sensation, feeling these thoughts- the song is already such a gorgeous lament- then these lines show up. to me together they mean Participation (selling one's 'self') and Non-participation ("passing") in The Game.

This lyric, or 2 lyrical lines, has become my most devastatingly gorgeous and relevant from the TT library:

"A time to sell yourself
A time for passing"

Society demands us to be 'on', showing our "best face" at all times- selling ourselves... doesn't it? Some of us are so lost as to be unable to turn off the choice to respond or not. Potential costs are status, dominance, acceptance, power, money, and so many others.

To me Mark informs us of an alternative; a Third Way- one not requiring wholesale rejection of the social machine, yet not requiring participation (selling) either. Yet recognizing I could be 180º wrong, I choose to carry these lyrics as an affirmation.

Thoughts?

@[eugenie:33101] Apparently it was even worse (better) on versions Mark discarded- a larger number of choir voices, with a longer/richer section in the song. According to the housekeeper, she regularly wept it was so incredibly lovely.
