Some clocks and watches have what's known as a sweep second hand, and when you're flipping out on lsd, the drug makes it appear that the second hand is moving backwards, so that you think the trip will never end and you're trapped in an eternal hell. |

When you're lying there waiting for it to wear off, praying to God for another dawn and you look at your watch but you're still hallucinating so the second hand appears to unwind. It's a relief when the total darkness (Paul McCartney's 'the darkness that surrounds us') turns to the gray of an approaching dawn. The person in the song goes to the hospital and their friend is looking at them through the window while they 'come down'. |
