No idea what the true meaning behind the lyrics is but I've always imagined this differently to most. To me it has always brought to mind this idea the maidens were lovers, unable to live together as they want and get rid of the knights without any risk of comeback. Sick of the constant hassling and pestering from the knights they decided to "kill two knights with the same tiger" so to speak and slipped them the potions so they would trip balls, hallucinate and meet their untimely end not realising the danger nor suffering too much. The knights believed they were hallucinating when the tigers appeared thereby not getting to safety or being particularly afraid and the maidens feel they've at least allowed them the privilege of seeing dreams, lights and not feeling afraid before being killed. Also always got the sense the maidens enjoyed some level of perverse pleasure in watching all of this unfold before they went back to living and being together in peace for the time being. |
