| Definitely about John, as I see it- lyrics talk about being friends with the person when he was young which is more fitting if he’s talking about John rather than any girlfriend. Paul himself has compared the sound to ‘Oh! Darling’ which is also about John, and to me it just makes sense if two songs with a similar sound have close meanings. A third, more tenuous, reason is the way he pronounces “joy”, it sounds like John (perhaps just to me though) but he has pronounced certain words as John/Johnny before, most notably some of the “darlings” in ‘Oh! Darling’, so I wouldn’t put it past Paul to reuse this device if I am hearing correctly :) | |
