There's many thoughtful interpretations of the song posted so I thought I'd post my own. I've always thought that the song was about the Egyptian practice of burry the Pharaohs servants alive within the kings tomb. They were given enough food to last them for three seasons so that they could care for the Pharaoh's body during his passage to the afterlife. Hence "seasons in the abyss", meaning the seasons spent within the burial chamber before hunger, thirst, or insanity took their tole. The lyrics paint a picture of the unfortunate servants slow descent into violent insanity, accompanied only by his masters corpse and the other poor souls condemned to the same fate Inert flesh A bloody tomb A decorated splatter brightens the room An execution a sadist ritual Mad intervals of mind residuals |
