For me this is one of the best songs about America. I am surprised to learn from the comments that he did not write it himself. It is a perfect Jim Croce song. |

This song is about one thing: Nothing at all. Someone kicking back, not having a worry in the world. I know it is almost unimaginable these days, but 'nothing' is a good thing. In the 70s that was achievable with no internet, no cell phones. You were in a place and you had little adventures like stepping on a pop-top that most may not realize existed. I love to research meanings of songs, and if they are challenging I love to dig in. This song is what I like to use to bring me back to earth when things get overwhelming at work or elsewhere. Wish my only worry would be a "shaker of salt" missing.... its manageable. Thanks Jimmy Buffett for providing a quick escape! Enjoy your lives, folks! Sometimes it just is what it is. |

Thinking this is a song about someone getting older. There is no religious undertone at all. Even the gideons "bible" (that was mainly put together by the Vatican in the ~15th century) is found everywhere and is as common for a traveler as the pillow on a bed. It does not have any meaning. Nobody ever touches the "bible" in the hotel rooms - unless they have to move it to a different area in the room. As he (the person in the song) gets older, he grows more to be alone. His kids moved out and started their own life. His wife and him may have grown apart, which is why she is having an affair. Life does not stop for anything or anybody - no way to slow down. That person is now looking to make the best out of the time that is left. It is in all our futures, friends. Embrace it, don't fight it! Jethro Tull remains awesome and will live for much longer than any of us that read this. |

I think this is a warning to all to not live in the past. At 50+ I have seen and done a lot of things in my past. Forgetting to take that corner may lead you into thinking that things are meaningless. I see the last verse at someone committing suicide since (s)he did not realize that it might be time to settle, and still see this as a move forward (much as the author did). I feel for that person, since it may have also have been me. "married with" 2 "kids", dreams may be postponed until my kids take flight! But there is always so much to look forward to!!!! |

| Leonard Cohen – Treaty Lyrics | 6 years ago |

I love reading all the different interpretations of this song. I personally think that Mr. Cohen would love to see all the different views. In poetry it should be up to the reader to interpret what is important to her or him. Though I may be entirely incorrect, I think this song is something much simpler that a relationship between the writer and "god". I think it is a simple realization that a human relationship does not work at all. It is not a violent breakup. It respects the other person (and hopefully we all had a relationship with someone that we adored... where we would thing that person can turn water into wine, or walk on water), but a relationship also gets to the point where the other person is just a …. well person. Well, then there is the part about the snake in that song. Maybe that is the other person cheating and never really coming back? Not sure yet... That is what I love about Mr. Leonard Cohens works. To this day the song Suzanne (especially the 2nd verse) keeps me puzzled. Honestly, I hope I find something that explains his lyrics to me - which might be completely different from another person. I am sure that Mr. Cohen would love that!!!!!! |
