Cake – Love You Madly Lyrics 6 years ago
@[fallon:32700] I think this is what you're supposed to THINK it is, until the final verse about not wanting to sit across from her wishing he could run makes you realize that its actually darker than that, and he's avoiding his feelings because he WANTS to be in love with her

I think this song is another one that plays with the listener expectations.

At first it seems romantic - he wants to love her madly. And he doesn't want to worry about the future or think about things going South. They're together now and that's all he cares about

But by the final verse especially, you begin to get the sense that the chorus of the song is actually meant literally - he WANTS to love her madly, but he doesn't. Unlike the first verse, the part about not wanting to sit across from her wishing he could run seems too specific. Like he HAS felt that, but doesn't want to. And once you realize that, the previous lines about not wanting to wonder or worry become literal as well - he is avoiding his feelings but he DOES have worries, and worse. Their relationship has already gone South, and he's unhappy, but he just wants to kiss her and forget it.

It also reframes lines like "I don't want to talk about it". He wants to avoid the subject.

He is in a bad relationship that he wants to be good and he's in denial and pushing down the desire to run and the feelings of being unhappy/trapped, thinking he can wish himself into loving her.

A really cool song.

@[idavidblack:32699] I think what he's saying is he wants somebody both able to have fun, but also be responsible. She gets up early to go to work, but she still likes to have a good time.

@[Wrapid:32698] I don't think he's sarcastic, I think he's just self aware that its unexpected for a song like this. He wants a girl like that because he's at a point in his life where he is ready to settle down and wants somebody who is able to take care of themselves and be responsible. That's the joke of the song is that he is interested in that instead of just what she looks like. He does want somebody sexy but he wants somebody sexy and responsible, and as the song goes on he gets more and more literal on the responsible parts, which is supposed to be funny, but not insincere

I think this song is meant to be sincere, just self-aware, which is the joke-y part of it.

Its a mature love song: the love song of a guy in his 30's instead of a guy in his 20's and what he finds sexy now is a girl who has her crap together.

The song intentionally draws parallels between things that are traditionally considered sexy (great breasts) with things that are responsible and mature (great dividends). That's what makes it funny is he makes you think he's making an innuendo because of what you expect a song like this to sing about but then you realize its sincere and literal.

He's having a laugh about what he, later in life, finds sexy or attractive in a girl, and how that's changed over time. He wants to settle down with somebody professional who can support themselves and is capable and adult. But I do think its supposed to be portrayed positively, not negatively. I think the "sarcasm" people are detecting is just him being well aware that it's funny that that's what he now desires and playing with the listener expectations.

@[quas:32697] I think you're drawing the wrong comparison - I think the comparison is between things that are traditionally considered sexy (great breasts) with things that are responsible and mature (great dividends). I think the joke is that what he finds sexy at this point in his life is a girl who has her crap together. I think its supposed to be a positive thing, not negative. A love song by somebody in their 30's rather than somebody in their 20's. That's the joke.

@[Fritzy:32696] This is what I think the song is about - drawing a funny parallel with a mature love song, sounding like he's singing about salacious things, but just wanting a girl who has her crap together

@[humblegod:32695] I disagree on the meaning of Short Skirt/Long Jacket - I think that's a fair point to bring up compatibility, but I think the comparison in that song is based on things that you would normally associate with a song like that (physical appearance, being 'hot', down for sexual things, stuff like that) but instead he desires a girl who has her life together and is professional and has the right priorities. I think the joke of the song is that its a mature love song, in that what he finds sexy at this point in his life is a girl who wants a car that values utility over flash, and who has good finances, and goes to the bank, etc.

So basically, I think its trying to say those things are more meaningful than if he was singing about her breasts or something. (And I think thats why they draw the innuendo parallel with things like good dividends)

@[rasputin33:32694] I think the room that you live in might be referring to her physical body in general - it kind of fits the theme of the song, that they are alike when you look at their minds/souls/personalities. But he's a man, and she's a woman. By referring to her body as a "room" that "she" (her soul) lives in, he is further drawing a parallel that they are alike, and stripping her inner identity from her physical appearance. They are two similar souls in opposite bodies, and one can get away with more because of it.
