This song is about intergenerational trauma. "Reach for the sun in spite of all of you" refers to the speaker's will to rise above. Many victims of dysfunctional families have to effectively raise themselves, hence "I'm my own man built by my own hands". The song concludes with "My legacy won't inherit disease from me" which refers to the speaker's resolve to not pass on the trauma he experienced from a dysfunctional home to his children. |
