To me this is clearly the narrative of someone explaining to a younger person why the older generation is more conservative , cynical and less idealistic than they are , by asking them to see the world through the eyes of the average working man . To me the clearest example is the narrator asking for his friend ( student)..to imagine some poor shlep dragging himself home from a hard day at mundane work , exhausted and yet facing another infinite amount of days ahead doing the same exhausting work...and their on TV is some guy ( Martin Luther King ) talking about a dream of a world where all is free. Now we who all believed in that world, back in the 70s when we were HS and College students , can look back and recognize that all that wonderful ideological views of what the world could be...just couldn’t be..and maybe looking back ..we were foolish to say ( and believe) that...in this complex and politicized world I also think the guy in the white Stetson hat references the famous picture of JFKs assassin...and how the hope of America for a world where all was free...died with JFK. I could also see the reference to being that Oswald was just a dupe...and that greater forces in the world were responsible for the assasinations of JFK and King. |

I agree this is a very straight forward and poignant lyric But It is so straight forward that I still think you guys are missing the thrust...this is a person despondent over the loss of their child That’s why they have a vision of a child returning...that why their memory is contained as a vision in a picture frame...that’s why he wants to watch children playing to understand his feelings I think this is really clear |
