I believe this song is about overcoming one’s temptations/predispositions regarding sins/mistakes. This person is clearly tormented by their guilt and shame and feels controlled by whatever moral failure they have. This person is sad and depressed, but still trying to get rid of their darkness (maybe even in unhealthy ways if you take “both shall we bleed” a little more literally). Idk about you, readers, but when I feel depressed, it’s hard to sleep at night, so this is why the midnight knows this person’s halo on fire so well. They’re trying to be better or, at least, fake it, but their Halo on Fire doesn’t let them forget their guilt, sadness, shame or whatever bad feelings they have. If they give in to their desire, they know they’ll just feel bad about it later (which is why the desire “creates another hell”). The ending of the song seems like this person getting that ‘second wind’ to keep fighting their inner darkness, trying to get rid of it, trying to be better. They may have been desperate and tired, but they didn’t give up at the end. Personally, I think this is, without a doubt, the best song of the album. Definitely in my top 10 of Metallica songs for the lyrics alone. I like them a lot, and I think what I said here fits well with James’ comment someone else posted. |

I think this song is about an evil entity (which I’ll refer to as the Devil) trying to get someone to feel so miserable about themselves that they’ll commit suicide and suffer forever more within his grasp. His temptations are really strong to this person, hence why he’s the beauty that makes them cross their sacred boundaries. The Devil wants this person to give up trying to be moral, to be good, and let themselves free to live in attractive sin, to worship him through committing such sins. But, in the end, he’s gonna mistreat this person, make them suffer badly because he despises people. He wants their life snuffed out. Gone. He wants that person to be so depressed, so lonely and loathsome to the point of committing suicide because it’s fun to him. The Devil wants this person to doubt themselves in such a level that, even in death, they won’t find comfort, ever. James’ parts are just clearing it up that the Devil is the root [of suffering], the progress [of his evil, the one he offers to the person] and the aggressor [self-explanatory]. The more meme-worthy parts of the songs are multiple things related to suicide methods: - A tablet [of medicine]; - These ten stories [people jump off from to die]; - The view [from either the roof or the window of some building someone could also jump off to kill themselves]; - The table [someone uses to prop themselves up before hanging themselves] |
