Icon For Hire – Nerves Lyrics 6 years ago
To me, this sounds like someone who follows their dreams, has an idea about something and pictures it, then gets the chance to be what they always wanted to be, only to find it's nothing like they thought it'd be. This is especially true, I think, for music artists who have ideas about their music and songs, but end up joining a record company who have very different ideas. (Which, I think, is what ended up happening with Icon For Hire. They joined Tooth and Nail, but they were given a co-writer to supervise and keep them in line.)

Icon For Hire – Hope of Morning Lyrics 6 years ago
People with depression suffer in many different ways, but one thing most of us have in common is that it tends to strike at night, when you're alone and not doing anything to preoccupy your mind.

This song, I think, is set during that time; when it crops up, I feel Ariel is saying here to not let it win, to keep fighting until the sun rises and morning comes. Sure, your problems won't all go away with the sun's rays, but you can at least tell yourself you managed to fight it long enough to see the sun.

I think, also, that a lot of the lyrics are Ariel's journal, in a way. Her thoughts in a song, and I'm not sure whether to be pleased or worried that so many of us resonate with the lyrics. ("Self-disgust and selfishness tend to hold me awfully close" is a strong one for me.)

Personally, I take this to be about self-harm. I mean, it could be about depression, totally, but I see it as being about hurting yourself. You feel yourself getting better, get scared and feel the need to go back to what feels comfortable. The physical action shows the "breaking bones", I guess. I don't know, that's just always what I've seen it as.
