My thoughts are, this song isn’t the (Happy-Go-Lucky) everybody seems to think it is. I think M.S, is trying to say we’re so obligated by the materialistic things, the general concern for the fellow man is fleeting as a wave of selfishness is being cast over today’s society.. I think what Stipes’ saying is, the true value doesn’t come from gold or silver (materialistic possessions) everybody’s running a rat race, so concerned and focused on doing the best for them and not expressing the wealthiness from inside and are they really happy? All the people at the top are constantly treading on one another to take each other’s place but act best of friends to their face, are they really happy? Do they really love and or respect each other? |

I believe, seeing as I heavily relate to this song. I get the feeling JR’s father was extremely abusive, his mother was constantly linking up with men either for money or to spite his father. I get the feeling that JR’s father was an abusive alcoholic and back then, A LOT of child abuse was happening (sexual) that’s where I think the lyrics derived from “I never gave anyone the slightest notion” that either, he and his mother were being sexually abused and beaten perhaps? “Mums grabbing her jewellery hidden in the bathroom calling the cops.” Hiding herself away from JRs father? And a lot of my teen years I spent homeless sleeping from my town to the city and constantly changing trains so I had somewhere warm and safe to sleep, I feel as if JR’s saying he wants to come home, he wants somewhere safe to rest his head instead of riding trains sleeping on them. |

I believe, this part has some relation to religion & how it’s “fading” in today’s generation & questioning of it trying to have control over us I.e Two skies watching it all, fading Two skies living it all, fading Two skies watching it all, fading Two skies fading, one's abating It’s obvious that the real “God” is the only great one living in the sky, watching everybody at once (our actions and sins.) Losing faith in those who don’t follow their way. And only one can be right. And how it’s been used too control people. I think the next part is in relation to the Prodigal Son, Luke 15:11-32. Two sons, living it all Dying, Two sons fighting, Ones abiding, -Guitar- Two sons, Watching them both, Fighting, Two sons, Seeing them both, Dying, Two sons, Watching them both, Fighting, Two sons fighting, Ones’ abiding. As the tale goes, there was a father, very wealthy; who held two sons, one was very loyal to his father & never left his side; the other was more impressed by alcohol, partying and prostitutes and had moved away to a foreign country & wasted his share of his fathers’ estate. As it would be a major famine had hit that country & he had nothing, he had asked someone for work, as granted he got work feeding swine but they never fed him, as he grew jealous of the swine he came to a thought that his father has enough bread too feed his servants and some too spare. He had returned to his father, upon arrival, his father had his servants dress him in the finest robe, sandals and ring and as you could imagine the other son became insanely jealous because he had stuck by his father the longest and his brother had gotten better treatment and the hurt he felt when he put on a major feast for his brother and saying (not quote) “We will slaughter the fattest swine and rejoice; for your brother was once dead and now truly alive” (Alive because he had seen his way back to his FAITH and his father.) Isn’t it weird how a normal human reaction can be considered a sin? (My interp x2) People dedicate their lives to following & believing their God will look after them. Still die of cancer, unfair causes, etc like Children starving, homelessness. Living their lives believing and praying too go unheard or noticed. While religion is over a multi-billion dollar industry & fuelling wars. And the next part. Crack pipes, needles, PCP and fast cars kinda mix really well with a dead movie star, When I feel like talking, I could never be wrong, If I feel like walking, you best come along, I close my windows, crank the heat up high Till my palms are wet and my tongue is dry I'm looking for a mother that will get me high Just a stupid motherfucker, if I die, I die I'm a Midnight fistfight Looking for a mother that will get me high Just a stupid motherfucker if I die, I die I feel that what they’re saying here & in relevance to what I said before, with religion becoming less and less, this is how the movie & music industry trying to brainwash us with how “we we should be” I.e Glorification of drugs & partying from Hollywood movie stars, music artists & endorsing this and falling into a trap of addiction and unhappiness winding up, you guessed it, dead, and how common this sort of story is. & it’s considered an honourable way out in a fucked up way. I.e When I feel like talking, I could never be wrong, If I feel like walking, you best come along. How people hang on every word that they say, study everything they do to be like said person, being a bad arse, doing drugs and fighting is cool, endorsing that it’s “cool to not give a fuck about yourself.” |
