Written in 1985 I suspect this is about the struggles his marriage was going through at the time. Fighting for the marriage, fighting for survival, still in love with his wife but exhausted, hurt, and struggling. Reflecting on the love they have shared brings him back when he just wants to run away. It’s a love song with common theme: the struggle of marriage and how one partner make feel they are working harder than the other to keep things together. |

@[deluded:47461] thing song was written and recorded in 1985 and released in 1986 before he dated Rosanna Arquette. He wasn’t divorced from his wife Jill until 1987. While people split up and move on before divorces are finalized I doubt Rosanna had an effect one way or another on the end of his marriage. Jill had an affair with his producer David Lord. I suspect this is about the struggles his marriage was going through. Fighting for the marriage, fighting for survival, still in love with his wife but exhausted, hurt, and struggling. Reflecting on the love they have shared brings his back when he just wants to run away. Digging in the dirt is a metaphor for delving in the past, digging up skeletons of the past. After divorce from his nearly 16 year marriage to Jill Moore he sought therapy for depression. In the beginning refrain he was mentions “The places I got hurt.” As therapy progresses we find perspective out side ourselves. The refrain later changes to “the places we got hurt.” A crumbling marriage, anger issues, infidelity, divorce, hurt, depression, therapy, forgiveness, and eventually healing. |

To me this song is about the aftermath of a breakup. Sometimes people lives shrink down as friends slip away when so much focus is on the other person. The relationship left her broken and alone. She has to relearn to eat alone, sleep alone, breath alone, and wake up alone. She is lonely and hurt checking the phone for calls or messages from anyone. When she is out she keeps her chin up. When at home she cries alone. |

I love many of Sia’s songs. This one to mean is about a girl engaged to a guy who finds him drifting away. He is wrapped up playing video games playing on his phone and not giving her attention. When confronted he proclaims he is working and should be able to hang with the guys. She realizes he is cheating on her close to the wedding. She decides to break things off even though everything for the wedding is already planned. This song proclaims that she would rather be single than cheated on, that she would rather cancel the wedding at the last minute and perhaps anger and lose friends than marry a cheater. |

This is one of my favorite songs. To me this song could have several meanings. 1. A woman in a relationship with a guy. She cheated, lied and he found out. She loves him but the relationship is damaged. Whenever she wants to talk about this he avoids the conversation. Not moving on, not breaking up, not forgiving but not leaving. Once on the path of a happy couple to marriage their path is now broken. She sings of regret and sorrow marked with sleepless nights and getting drunk. 2. The other meaning I have thought of is a woman struggling with alcohol addiction. A boyfriend who doesn’t want to face it. The cycle of addiction with alcoholism hiding it, lying about it. Relationship falling apart from addiction. 3. Another meaning focuses on the throwing the hat in the air. Tossing the hat symbolizes a bright future and success. Watching it fall signifies a let down as reality setting in. This is a beautiful, deep and meaningful song I wish there were more thoughts and comments on it on here. |
