| No, no, no... He isn't talking about a work of art... He is talking about a woman who he is obsessed with, who happens to be pursuing another "phantom" man, meaning, unknown man. He sees the writing on the wall, meaning her behavior, her rejection of him, and possibly even sees her going off in the night to be with him, but doesn't know who he is, so he is called a phantom in the song. Basically this is a song about a guy who is obsessed with a woman who is beautiful, who he once had a sexual relationship with, who has now discarded him for another unknown man. He is also stalking her both literally, and mentally in his mind. Read the lyrics again. It's crystal clear. This also applies to anyone today who might be referencing fb wall of an ex. Seeing picture on the wall. As he aptly states. So this song, while written years ago, can take on a more modern meaning as it can also apply to a man who is fb stalking his ex lover.
