| The Prodigy – Firestarter Lyrics | 3 years ago |

I've always regarded this as allegorical rather than literal. The "twisted fire starter" is the negative thought or emotion that becomes an obsession and will ultimately consume the individual, such that the individual and the fire starter become one another. Me, this thought, I am the trouble maker... to "punk" is to make spiky, prickly - I instigate that - I prick your mind. That thing you fear but that you can't get away from - an example of peril, of something that will hurt you badly - I'll remind you of that until you can see nothing else. The partner that spurned you, that you both loathe and are addicted to by at the same time. A lust that defies reason and makes you feel dirty; fills you with self-loathing. That wound of rejection turns foul the drunkenness of love. You do it to yourself. You poison your own mind, plant the germ that will grow into the puppet master that will control you. These words, with that music, the way the tempo changes from a slow pulsating beat to a staccato crackle like a flame suddenly finding fresh tinder... It's aggressive, yes, but a combination of words, music and visual images that blend together so powerfully. It energises the listener so strongly. It's no wonder it's a dance floor favourite. Love it. RIP Keith. |
