| @[creedude:31801] "Core" shows the ambition, "Purple" the artistry, "Tiny Music…" the diversity, "No. 4" the breakdown, and "Shangri-la-dee-da" the farewell. All are essential albums; the first three albums are all killers, the fourth a concept album on suffering, and SHANGRI-LA-DEE-DA the delusion of hope | |

"Glide" is a lyrically-altered version of a song called "Saturday" written by the DeLeos and played live with singer Dave Coutts as Talk Show around 1997-98. "Saturday" has the same instrumental arrangement as "Glide", but the lyrics and melodies are different. To compare, Scott's "Torment the tortured, teach me things/ I'm so alive..", was originally "Wake up on any day you see… Satur-day-eeee" in Dave Coutt's lyrical take on the music. Scott's artistic lyrics, use of falsetto and diverse melodies make the Stone Temple Pilots' No. 4 track "Glide" the definitive version of the song. This album is about Weiland's experiences with drugs, prison, and the effects on his life and his relationships. In that context, "Glide" is the feeling of getting high on heroin. With ragged waves of warm guitar sounds cascading over the listener, Scott wistfully sings about cycles of addiction, providing a lyrical counterpoint to the uplifting music and soothing melodies that make the song sound like a bittersweet power ballad to heroin. It's sad that No. 4's most musically uplifting track is seemingly about chasing the dragon, and Scott's sad preference for the warm, floating feeling of a drug to facing sobriety and overcoming the pain, regret, and hopelessness of reality, but there it is. The song is also great in that you can feel Scott's despair in coming down with the "It's too late / The time is gone/Later on again/'cause no-one's leaving" section, which inevitably leads back to drugs: "There is nowhere to turn to, nowhere / there is nowhere to run / you can fly with the fader, fly it / Fly it all on the run". A great song, off a great album. "SATURDAY" lyrics: Wake up on any day, you see saturday The center on the memory you vision, what a day Drawing a picture We call it memory Come on, take a photograph And save yourself for me I would not wait I will not waste away With the city girl Who won't come out and play Wake up on a manic dream and see saturday Center on the memory, you need another day We call it a picture Call it memory And turn into a photograph You save yourself for me I will not wait I would not waste away With the city girl She won't come out and play Roll around the universe Why don't you - saturday Play it while it's really worth Why don't you - saturday Roll around the universe Why don't you - saturday Make it what it's really worth Why don't you - saturday My city girl - who won't come out and play I think Dave Coutts recently released a version of "Saturday", so there you go. RIP Scott, thanks for the memories. You died on my 30th birthday, and will never be forgotten! As for STP, keep rockin' and good luck with Jeff Gutt! |
