Genesis – Watcher Of The Skies Lyrics 6 years ago
@[Madprophet:31736] Interesting.
Let me just add that the whole "this is your world..." part is simply metaphorical: the Watcher is a solitary being whose destiny is to move from world to world only to learn what happened there. He has no world of his own (perhaps his own world has suffered the same fate of the one he just visited) and in a way, this perennial wandering is "his world" in the same way, say, as the sea is a pirate's "world".

@[Anglagard1:31735] I think Marillion's title might also NOT have anything to do with Clarke's work - the point is that the end of childhood is the flip side of "becoming a man", "growing up" so metaphorically you become something "better" that can do more things and has more power but you lose your innocence.
I guess that this issue, together with love, love&death, immortality, etc is simply a popular issue to say the least.

Fascinating.
Having discovered Genesis in an age where I minded little about the lyrics I've never focussed much beyond my initial interpretation. Here I just thought the Watcher was one guy with a very advandced telescope or monitoring equipment, he sees an unknown planet but the reflections he makes about the creatures having been gone might be about his own planet OR both the planets have suffered the same fate.
His fate is to only watch, and learn about the fate of other worlds, and no world is his own.
Yeah it makes little logical sense but that was my take.
